Colchester vs Port Vale Preview

Every summer, Colchester tend to see one or two of their stars leave for pastures new. John McGreal has waved goodbye to Frankie Kent and Sammy Szmodics over the last couple of months whilst goalkeeper Dillon Barnes have joined QPR. Dean Gerken returns to the club whilst the arrivals of Omar Suwumni, Luke Gambin and Jevani Brown should certainly go some way to helping replace the outgoing stars. Fans will be used to this kind of transition, and they’ll be quietly confident of their side challenging at the top end of the table. They ended the season strongly, collecting ten points from a possible twelve, and McGreal will be hoping his side can take that momentum into this campaign. Once again, a number of younger players are likely to feature across the course of the season, and it’ll be interesting to see how many of them can break into the side. For the main part, Colchester’s home form was very strong, with 12 wins in Essex last season, although they were defeated on seven occasions. They also kept eleven clean sheets at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, and they will make it difficult for Port Vale to find a way past them.

Port Vale fans are looking forward to this season with the club under new ownership. Carol Shanahan is in charge, and is keeping faith with John Askey. The former Macclesfield man isn’t the bigger character in League Two, but he gets his side working hard, and they will be ready for this opening encounter. Vale relied largely on their away form, and they lost just eight times outside of Burslem. They also kept things tight on the road, conceded just 19 times on their travels, and only five teams scored more than a single goal against them throughout the course of the season. They also faced Colchester in their opening away game of last season, and lost 2-0, but they look better prepared this time around, and that continuity factor will certainly help their cause. They haven’t added any standout stars although a fully fit Mark Cullen could be dangerous for any opposition.

Colchester vs Port Vale Betting Tips

Just 17% of Port Vale’s away games last season featured three or more goals, and they should take a similar approach once again here. Although its odds-on, Under 2.5 Goals looks a sensible play in this game. Port Vale didn’t actually lose many games on the road, and they will probably look to keep it tight for the first 45 mins. They were only defeated 2-0 here last season, and will be determined to make the long journey back with something to show for it.

There shouldn’t be much between these two sides, and I’d expect a close game. Two of the three previous meetings between these sides have ended all-square, and prior to last season’s 2-0 defeat, there had barely been more than a single goal between the pair. 1-1 in the shortest price in the correct score market, and that looks a decent option in this potentially cagey season-opener.
