Coventry vs Southend Preview

Coventry are homeless for the second time in the last five years, and will play their home games at St.Andrews this year. Although this is an inconvenience for the fans, and many of them will not be travelling to home matches, there is still plenty of confidence surrounding the Sky Blues. Mark Robins’ side weren’t too far outside the play-offs last season, and they have recruited solidly this summer. Marko Marosi arrives from Doncaster, whilst they’ve also raided Burton for the excellent Jamie Allen and Kyle McFadzean. Wesley Jobello is an intriguing addition, who will definitely worth keeping an eye on, and at the time of writing, they’ve also kept hold of a large number of promising youngsters. They will have plenty of energy in the squad, and this young team should prove a handful for the majority of opposition sides. Coventry had decent form at the Ricoh last season, with very few goals conceded, and it’ll be interesting to see how they cope with this transition. Robins will be looking to keep his players focussed on the job in hand, and his squad looks perfectly capable of troubling the top six this time around.

Southend stayed up by the skin of their teeth last season, and they have Kevin Bond to thank for preserving their League One status. The Essex club were beset by injury problems, and many fans felt as though the fitness gods were against them throughout the entire 2018-19 campaign. Luckily, they have the majority of their squad back, and they should finish much higher this time around. They’ve been very quiet in the market with only Mark Milligan and Nathan Ralph arriving through the door at Roots Hall alongside Brendan Goodship. Simon Cox is a year older, but will still have plenty of energy, whilst I believe that Stephen Humphrys will be one of the more prolific strikers in the division. Kevin Bond will have his squad ready for this opening clash, but they didn’t enjoy facing Coventry last season, losing both games against the Sky Blues for the first time in over 60 years.

 

Coventry vs Southend Betting Tips

There will be plenty of people sceptical about Coventry playing their games in Birmingham this season, but I do think they can build on last seasons decent home record. They kept things tight, and played some decent football in the final third. There have been plenty of changes, but this is a talented young squad, and Mark Robins is an astute operator at this level. Southend lost eleven times on the road last season, and although they have a much fitter squad this time around, they have never been known for their form away from Roots Hall. I do think that the Sky Blues can pick up their third consecutive victory against this opposition on Saturday.

However, I do think that Southend can make their mark in this match, and they should be able to find the back of the net at least. They should play their part in an entertaining game, and although it’s an odds-on shot, Over 2.5 Goals looks like a sensible shout at St.Andrews.
