And Newport fans will be hoping lightning doesn’t strike twice here even though there would be absolutely no shame in it if it did. Frankly, City are arguably the country’s best resourced football club and should be breezing into the next round even if they are playing on unfamiliar territory. I can see Pep’s men dishing out another larruping on Saturday evening, to the tune of several goals to nil. For that reason, I’m highly tempted by the 13/10 available on the visitors winning by four goals or more – particularly after what happened to Burton a few weeks ago.

It is, however, fellow South American Gabriel Jesus who tends to be preferred in the domestic cups – and I see no reason why that will change with the trip to Wales on the horizon. The Brazilian sensation has bagged seven goals in as many games in the FA and Carabao Cup this season and will surely add to that tally should he have a starting berth here. Given the opposition, there’s not much value in Jesus to score anytime but with 6/4 available on him to score two or more I’ll have to invest.

Newport are around the 30/1 mark to cause arguably the greatest FA Cup upset of all time and see off City inside the 90 minutes at Rodney Parade. Those odds are reflective of the magnitude of the task ahead and would probably have to be far longer to attract the average punter. Try as I might, I just can’t see County going any further in the competition although that’s certainly not to besmirch their achievement in reaching this far.

There are very few teams who can live with Manchester City when they’re at the peak of their powers, and even fewer still in League Two. One or two neutrals may expect Newport’s packed stadium and lower league pitch to act as a bit of a leveller but it will surely take a lot more than that to unsettle a City side packed to the rafters with fully fledged internationals. With that in mind, and the knowledge that Guardiola will almost certainly select a very strong line-up, I’d have to plump instead for a heavy away victory. A 0-4 or 0-5 score line ought to be in the right ballpark.
