Shrewsbury Town v Manchester United predictions and betting tips for tonight’s FA Cup fixture where Man United will be looking to avoid a massive cup shock.
Tonight brings a little bit of history as Shrewsbury Town take on Manchester United for the first time in a competitive match in this FA Cup Fifth Round tie and our football tipster has picked their best three bets.
Shrewsbury have lost three of their last four at home, but the victory in the middle of that poor run came in this competition against Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. In fact, their last two games in the FA Cup saw them dispose of higher league opposition, the other being in the Third Round which saw the Shrews travel to Cardiff and beat the Bluebirds 1-0. Their cup form contrasts with their league form though, they've not won a League One home game since October and have only won twice in the league in 2016, away wins at Burton Albion and Blackpool. They currently take up the last relegation spot in the League One table so this clash is a welcome distraction.
United head into this one after a woeful performance and a 2-1 defeat in the Europa League against F.C Midtjylland, which came after a 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Sunderland in the Premier League. It's hard to judge how Manchester United will do here, they've been inconsistent of late, after a defeat at home to Southampton they went to Derby for their FA Cup Fourth Round match and beat them comfortably before getting a point at Chelsea and an emphatic win against Stoke. However with those poor performances coupled with a pretty poor season overall, even a win here won't stop the United fans calling for the sacking of Louis Van Gaal, anything less than a win at Greenhaus Meadow could see that happen sooner rather than later.
Man United still have a host of injuries to contend with. David De Gea joins that list after injury in the warm-up before the Midtjylland game so Sergio Romero should continue in goal. Wayne Rooney, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Marouane Fellaini and Matteo Darmian are all out and Donald Love is cup tied after appearing the First Round while on loan at Wigan.
Shrews boss Mickey Mellon is hoping that Zak Whitbread, Ian Black and Jack Grimmer are fit enough to start along with ex-United trainee Larnell Cole who could make his first start since recovering from injury. One player who does miss out though is midfielder James Wallace who has picked up a knee injury.
This feels like it will be a full-bloodied typical Cup tie with Shrewsbury giving this everything. For my football betting tips I can see them getting on the scoresheet but I don't think they'll do enough to progress. For me, despite their poor form, United will do enough to win this one. Again, as with most Premier League sides who face lower league opponents the odds aren't great for the straight win (2/5 are the best you'll get) so instead get on United to win and both teams to score with Betfair at 23/10.
My first Shrewsbury Town vs Man United prediction for tonight’s FA Cup is Man United to win and both teams to score, the best odds for Man Utd BTTS are 23/10 with Betfair.
One of the very few shining lights for United this season has been the emergence of Jesse Lingard. Following successful loan spells over the last couple of seasons, particularly at Brighton, Lingard has cemented his place in the United first team. With Rooney out, the attention will be on Anthony Martial and Thursday night's goalscorer Memphis Depay but I think it will be Lingard who does the damage here. He's better priced too.
My second Shrewsbury vs Man United betting tip is for Lingard to score anytime; the best odds are 11/5 with bet365.
United simply have to win here. The Shrews will come out strong and make it hard for them but for me United will have too much.
For my final Shrewsbury vs Man United prediction, I think United to score in both halves is a decent shout at 23/20 with William Hill.
Man United to win and BTTS – 23/10 with Betfair.
Lingard to score anytime – 11/5 with Bet365.
Man United to score in both halves – 23/20 with William Hill.
