Forest Green vs Grimsby Betting Tips for the Conference Play-off Final

Forest Green v Grimsby Town betting tips and football predictions for the National League Play-Off Final on Sunday 15th May.

A place in League Two is up for grabs as Forest Green face Grimsby Town in the National League Play-Off final and our football tipster has got the best bets for the match.

Forest Green vs Grimsby Town Preview

It’s the second consecutive play-off final for Grimsby and they’ll be hoping for better luck this time around. In a cruel end to proceedings, Bristol Rovers won the penalty shootout and never looked back. The Gas have since won promotion again to League One and that should give the Mariners confidence they can emulate their victors. Paul Hurst’s men didn’t have the best end to the season, winning just twice in their last nine games as the campaign came to a conclusion. It took extra time to squeeze past ten man Braintree in the Semi-Finals, but they have experience in their ranks and that will help them here.

Hurt is confident his side won’t be daunted by the prospect awaiting and won’t suffer stage fright. He’s likened the occasion to the Championship play-off final, with the magnitude of the prize on offer. Grimsby are looking to end their exile from the Football League and Hurst believes the previous Wembley demons won’t come back to haunt them.

These sides have met twice this season, with very few goals across the two encounters. Grimsby haven’t lost to Forest Green since February 2015 and a Craig Disley winner was all that separated the sides when they met in early March. Disley has since said, he will see it as a failure if his side are not able to return to the Football League this weekend. Plenty of pressure on the Mariners and once again, they will take a big following to London as they look to put last season’s unwanted outcome behind them.

Forest Green are their opponents this time around and they have a new man at the helm. Mark Cooper took over just days ago after failing to fulfil his points target at Notts County. Ady Pennock was sacked after failing to guide his side to automatic promotion and alongside Cooper will be interim manager Scott Bartlett, who has been at the club since Dave Hockaday was in charge.

Cooper remains a bit of an enigma. Known for playing attractive football, he’s had success at Swindon, before tailing off and he never quite had enough of an effect at Notts County to merit a permanent position. He often has an instant effect though and it could potentially be a masterstroke by the hierarchy at Forest Green.

The two victories over Dover in the Semi-Finals were the first victories since the 12th of March. The club had been on a dismal run of now win in seven (5 draws, 2 losses), but they put that behind them when it mattered. It would be the first ever foray into the Football League for Forest Green and given the surprises that 2015-16 season has already thrown up, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise. There’s plenty to be positive about at the club and Bartlett is keen to stress the importance of bringing youngsters through at the club. It should be a fascinating final and a terrific occasion for both clubs and their respective managers.

Team News

  • James Jennings missed both play-off legs against Dover, but he is fully recovered and ready to reclaim the left back spot. Ben Jefford deputised for Jennings, but it is likely that experience will count on the big occasion and he’s likely to slot straight back in.
  • Elliott Frear was subbed against Dover, but only precautionary and he should be available for this match.
  • Sam Wedgebury and Marcus Kelly are definitely out.
  • Two of Grimsby’s most experienced players could miss this match. Andy Monkhouse has been unable to train this week, whilst Evan Horwood is touch and go after missing the matches with Braintree.
  • Elsewhere, Hurst has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Forest Green vs Grimsby Predictions

This is a one-off game and past results between the two sides go out of the window. Forest Green have markedly improved since Ady Pennock’s sacking and bringing in Mark Cooper could prove very effective. Grimsby didn’t end the season well and I fear this could be a step too far. My first Forest Green vs Grimsby betting tip is for Forest Green to win. They are 15/8 with William Hill.

There weren’t many goals between these sides in the regular season and neither side ran away with their semi-finals. I think it’ll be tense and nervy and will take a while to spring into action. My second Forest Green v Grimsby prediction is for Under 2.5 goals. It is 4/6 with Sky Bet.

Forest Green have been sharing the goals around recently. Keanu Marsh Brown struck against Dover and I fancy him to grab another here. My third football prediction for Forest Green v Grimsby in the Conference play-off final is for Keanu Marsh Brown to score anytime. He is 10/3 with Betway.
