Forest Green vs Oldham Preview

Forest Green were extremely enjoyable to watch last season, and played some terrific football along the way. It resulted in a play-off place, but Mark Cooper’s men couldn’t quite break down a stubborn Tranmere defence. FGR will be hoping to start with three points, and they’ve been handed a very winnable fixture. They actually performed better on the road last year, managing just eight wins at the New Lawn. Last season’s first home game also came against the Latics, with the pair sharing the points in a 1-1 draw. Cooper has lost the services of Reece Brown and Christian Doidge this summer, but they’ve made some interesting signings. On paper, they look slightly weaker, but the signing of Aaron Collins could be a masterstroke. He was excellent at Morecambe last season after losing his way at a higher level, and he could thrive as the main man in Gloucestershire. Matt Mills isn’t getting any younger, but he adds Championship experience, whilst Ebou Adams is a potentially exciting recruit. Plenty is expected for Forest Green this season, and Dale Vince is determined to get his club into the third tier. It’ll be interesting to see whether Mark Cooper can sort out his side’s inconsistent home form, and deliver the goods this season.

It’s always difficult to know what to make of Oldham. The club seems to have a remarkably high turnover of players, and managers rarely stick around for long. Laurent Banide is the latest man to take his spot in the dugout at Boundary Park, and it’ll be interesting to see how he approaches this opening game. The former Monaco-youth manager has a decent book of contacts, and he’s signed some fairly left-field players already. Having said that, Alex Iacovitti and Zak Mills have experience at this level, whilst Scott Wilson will offer plenty of energy in the final third. The Latics were hit-and-miss last season, but they only won twice away from home in 2019 (against Crawley and Colchester), and this is a tough opening assignment for Banide and his men.

Forest Green vs Oldham Betting Tips

Forest Green’s home form is a slight concern, but it’s not a surprise to see them priced up as the 13/10 favourites for this clash. FGR have lost some key players, but they appear to have replaced them with recruits who might actually be a better fit for their possession-based system. Oldham are difficult to assess, and they could be difficult to break down. The draw is a possibility, but I’m feeling reasonably confident about the home sides chances this season, so backing them to open the season with a victory makes sense.

One of FGR’s issues last season was keeping clean sheets. They kept just two shutouts between the start of last season and the end of November, and although they didn’t concede 2s and 3s, their opponents rarely drew a blank. Both Teams to Score? Yes looks tempting once again here. We don’t know much about Oldham will approach this under their new boss, but they did score plenty away from home last season, and they have the potential to be dangerous here.
