Ipswich vs Sunderland Preview

Ipswich got off to the perfect start in League One with a narrow victory over Burton Albion at the Pirelli. Luke Garbutt’s deflected effort was enough to give Paul Lambert’s men all three points, and they will be confident of remaining unbeaten here. Flynn Downes was the standout player on the field, whilst James Norwood put in a decent shift on debut. Ipswich didn’t create an awful lot in the first half, but they did look more of a threat as the game wore on. Burton gave them plenty of think about, but a lack of composure in the final third cost them dear. The Tractor Boys look a decent side despite keeping spending to a minimum this summer, and Lambert has proven effective at this level previously when he helped guide Ipswich’s arch rivals to League One promotion. They will look to do the basics well once again, and with everyone singing from the same hymn sheet, this young team is likely to put in yet another spirited performance.

Sunderland fans were left bemoaning their sides lack of firewpower once again as the Black Cats could only draw 1-1 at home to Oxford on the opening weekend. Jack Ross’ men created far more than their opponents, but weren’t able to fashion enough clear-cut opportunities to win the game. Once again, they displayed a weakness at the back, and that is a worry going forward. They’ve now drawn 13 of their last 25 matches, and it continues to be their downfall. They have added well this summer with George Dobson and Marc McNulty looking like savvy additions, but they still need to find a way of getting the best out of Will Grigg. Ross’ tactics have come under fire from many supporters on the messageboards, and if his side don’t start picking up victories soon, he may be packing his bags and leaving the Stadium of Light. On the plus side, Sunderland do tend to find the back of the net, and have scored in 54 of their last 55 competitive games, but they must start keeping clean sheets if they want to return to the Championship.

 

Ipswich vs Sunderland Betting Tips

Both of these two sides ranked highly in the pre-season predictions, and fans expect both outfits to be challenging for automatic promotion this time around. The Tractor Boys already have three points on the board, and the pressure will be off them here. Sunderland drew ten of their 25 away games last year, but they haven’t won on the road since April 6th (vs Rochdale). This squad is going to take some fine-tuning, but I’ve no doubt that they will be in and around the top two once again. They may have to settle for a second successive draw here. Ipswich will be hard to break down, and will be digging in throughout the 90 minutes. They’ll win plenty of games at Portman Road this season, but this may be a case of points shared.

Sunderland do tend to find the net, and although Ipswich kept a clean sheet on the opening weekend, they did allow their opponents to create a few opportunities. The visitors have plenty of individual players who are capable of creating something from nothing, which increases their chances of finding the net. Both Teams to Score? Yes is likely to shorten in Sunderland games going forward, but at 4/5, I’m happy to take it.
