Roma are the slightest of favourites, at a best price of 13/8, whereas Lazio, the designated home team, are available at 12/7. The draw is available at 27/10, all with Pinnacle.
Whilst regular readers (hello both of you…) will no doubt be aware that I’m thatsagoal’s resident QPR fan, you may not be aware that I’m also it’s resident AS Roma fan as well. And in my completely unbiased and impartial opinion (Forza Giallorossi!) this derby is the biggest out there. Sure, the Instanbul, Buenos Aires, even Glasgow derbies are all very nice and feisty and all, but for my money there is little better than seeing Francesco Totti once again score against Lazio, and then lifting his shirt to reveal a provocative anti-Lazio message. Fascist bastards.
Lazio and Roma find themselves fifth and sixth in the league respectively, but league position and form usually go out of the window when it comes to the derby. What is important, especially for Roma fans, is that Lazio won both matches last season, and Roma therefore need to make amends and bring the bragging rights back to the Curva Sud part of Stadio Olimpico.
I’m backing a Roma win here. This is in very large part because i could never bring myself to back Lazio in the derby, and in part because Lazio will have played on Thursday in the Europa League, and will not have had as much time to recover and prepare for this game. Roma have scored more goals than any other team in the league, but have also conceded more goals than every team bar Chievo. Each of Roma’s last four games have seen at least five goals, so Ladbrokes’s offer of 11/4 on both teams scoring AND Roma winning looks like value to me. There is no point in backing either both teams to score or over 2.5 goals though; both are available at a best price of 4/11 (!)
The Rome Derby rows up all sorts of interesting stats – 12 players have been sent off in the last eight derbies, and six of the last 12 goals scored have been penalties – this is not one for the feint hearted! As this match is not until Sunday, at time of writing the markets have not been fully populated yet, but keep an eye on these two markets closer to kick off and get on board…
In terms of who is going to score the inevitable glut of goals that this game produces, there are various notable candidates on both sides. Lazio have Miroslav Klose and Hernanes amongst the goals this season, whereas Roma have Osvaldo and Lamela at the top of the scoring charts themselve – Lamela has scored in his last five league games in a row. My pick however is for Er Pupone himself, Francesco Totti to score against Lazio again. Despite his advancing years, Totti is back to close to his best form, scoring in his last two games and has four for the season. He’s scored eight times against Lazio in the past, and is due to score against them again, having not scored in either derby last season. He’s 2/1 to score anytime against them with BlueSquare, and is the designated penalty taker if a penalty is inevitably conceded by Lazio.
