Sheffield Wednesday vs Everton Preview: Time ticking for Marco Silva?

Sheffield Wednesday betting tips

Everton manager Marco Silva is under increasing pressure following the 2-0 home defeat to Sheffield United at the weekend, and how his Everton side face a tricky trip to Hillsbrough to face Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday are on a decent run in the Championship and currently sit in 9th place in the table. Their weekend match was a 1-1 draw against Fulham and in the last round of the Carabao Cup they ran out 1-0 winners at Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United. This will be a much tougher test for new manager Garry Monk, who tests himself against Premier League opposition in Everton.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Everton Preview – 24/09/19: Carabao Cup 3rd Round

Everton fans will be concerned after the 2-0 loss at home to Sheffield United, and another defeat against the team from the other side of the Steel City could push Marco Silva even closer to the exit door. The Blades had one shot on target on Saturday but ran out 2-0 winners.

In the previous round of this competition, Everton eventually saw off League One Lincoln City, winning 4-2. Sheffield Wednesday have already beaten Rotherham and got a bye against Bury in the first round. Garry Monk has seen his side win 2-0 at Hudderseifld draw 1-1 against Fulham in their last two matches.

This will be eyed as one of the most likely Carabao Cup shocks of this week given Everton’s current form and performances against Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

Will the Owls put the final nail in the coffin for Marco Silva?

There is no doubt the pressure is growing on the Everton manager, but surely this is too early in the season for any managerial changes to be taking place at Goodison Park. The Blues finished last season really strongly but it is generally away from home where they struggle. Their 3-1 defeat away to Bournemouth was a very poor result and a poor performance to boot, and it seems as though Silva does not yet know what his best starting 11 is.

With the pressure mounting on the Portugese manager, it is hard to see him making many changes to his starting 11. In the last round against Lincoln, Everton played a full strength team so expect the likes of Richarlison, Alex Iwobi and Lucas Digne all to be in the starting line-up at Hillsborough.

Even though a defeat shouldn’t be fatal for Marco Silva, with a match against Manchester City coming up on Saturday, he will certainly want to get through to the fourth round draw to keep the fans at bay for a while longer at least.

Bet on Wednesday to push Everton all the way

Although Sheffield Wednesday are the outsiders to win this match, they will have a large Hillsborough crowd behind them and the added incentive of knowing that another defeat for Marco Silva will pile the pressure on. The Owls will fancy their chances of getting an upset here but for my prediction, I think they migth have to settle for a draw, taking the match to the lottery of penalties.

Everton’s away form has been terrible for a long time now and so far this season they’ve drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace, lost against Aston Villa and Bournemouth and won in this competition against Lincoln – despite not looking convincing they won 4-2.

The odds for this match to be a draw after 90 minutes are 3/1 with bet365 and that looks like a good betting tip here.
