Northampton v MK Dons predictions and football betting tips for this League One weekend fixture including an anytime goalscorer bet and over/under 2.5 goals bet.
MK Dons make the short trip north to Sixfields to take on Northampton in the Sunday lunchtime League One clash and our betting preview includes three best bets.
Northampton are still looking for their first win of the season under Robert Page. It doesn’t sound like a positive statistic but the Cobblers are unbeaten in the league since the 19th of December 2016 when Portsmouth took all three points back to the South Coast. It’s a significant achievement and shows just how difficult it is to take points off them.
MK Dons did beat them last season, but that was in the cup at Stadium MK. The Cobblers weren’t so impressive in the EFL Trophy, a performance for which boss Rob Page has apologised for. The loss was comprehensive, but there were many changes for both sides.
Paul Anderson has been added to the squad on Deadline Day and he should provide some width to the side. Northampton fans will be hoping he can regularly put the ball into the box looking for Alex Revell. The former MK Dons man has started life at Northampton well with his side, scoring once in the league and again in the cup. Fleetwood GK Chris Neal was responsible for the own goal on the opening day of the season, but Revell played a huge part in that.
The defence has looked solid this season with just three goals conceded in five games, but Gabriel Zakuani is away on International Duty for this one. Zander Diamond will be alongside a new partner at the back. Likely to be on loan Lewin Nyatanga. Emmanuel Sonupe and Raheem Hanley got minutes in the second half against Wycombe and they could be in for a start if Page wants to shake things up. JJ Hooper made his debut on Tuesday but it ended in disappointment and he’ll be looking to get off the mark for his latest club. The Cobblers need to show a bit more going forward and convert their chances if they want to take all three points for the first time this season.
The Dons added two players to their side on Thursday as Ryan Colclough and Jack Hendry arrive from Wigan. They were continually linked with players throughout the days, but missed out on targets such as George Moncur who chose Peterborough instead. Karl Robinson said he wanted a striker and winger, he got the latter in Colclough, but failed to bolster his strikeforce.
The Dons have looked a little light in attack since losing Will Grigg and with Nicky Maynard expected to lead the line, they could be short on firepower this season. Dean Bowditch has grabbed the goals in the cup this season, but Maynard is yet to find the target. They are working with a relatively large budget this season which adds further frustration to the lack of activity.
Scott Wootton is out for an extended period of time and he will be missed at the back. MK Don’s squad does look a little light on numbers, but they have a hugely promising academy with a number of terrific players coming through.
They were poor against Peterborough last weekend, losing 0-2 at Stadium MK to Peterborough. The Posh put in a terrific away performance. They have two wins to their name already this season though with victories over Shrewsbury and Rochdale. The Dons are quite difficult to break down, but they just lack a cutting edge going forward.
They’ve won just once in 13 home games including the latter stages of their unsuccessful Championship campaign. The fans have had little to cheer about at home, but on the road, they’ve looked more efficient and they could make life difficult for Northampton.
There was disappointment for Northampton in midweek in the EFL Trophy, but it should be normal service resumed here as they look to get their first win of the season. MK Dons will make life difficult for the Cobblers though and it could be another point for the home side so get on the draw which is our first Northampton vs MK Dons betting tip.
MK Dons don’t score enough goals and Northampton have been pretty efficient at the back. All of their games have gone under 2.5 so far this season and I can see this happening again this weekend, so my second football tip is for two goals or less to be scored.
Alex Revell will be determined to score against his former employers and the big striker is always a focal point of any attack, he looks the best bet for an anytime goalscorer tip to complete this weekend’s football betting tips on Northampton vs MK Dons.
