Exeter vs Northampton Predictions

It’s the day of destiny for these two sides as they take part in the League Two play-off final tonight. Exeter finished in 5th place in the curtailed season and beat Colchester United in the semi-final after extra time.

Northampton looked dead and buried after losing the first leg of their semi-final 2-0, but pulled off a brilliant 3-0 away win at Cheltenham Town to book their place in tonight’s final at Wembley.

Looking ahead to our predictions for this match, Northampton will have their tails up after that great 3-0 win over Cheltenham and in the head to head stats, they have a good record against Exeter, losing just once in the last 9 meetings. Despite finishing in seventh place in the League Two table, I am predicting that Northampton will book their place in League One tonight with a narrow win in the 90 minutes. For a correct score prediction, a 2-1 Northampton victory looks a good bet and the odds for this are 9/1 with Betfred.

Exeter Form

Exeter’s 2-1 win over Colchester which took the tie into extra time, was their first win in six matches. They lost the first leg of that tie 1-0 and had also lost out on an automatic promotion place after picking up just two points from the last five matches of the League Two season. That has left them in the play-offs and another trip to Wembley; their third in the space of four seasons.

Matt Taylor’s side lost the play-off final in both 2017 and 2018 and they’ll be hoping to go one better tonight.

In the first leg of the semi-final, Exeter didn’t register a shot on target but they did improve in the second leg and Ryan Bowman found the all-important winning goal in the 111th minute.

Bowman has scored 14 goals this season and will be a key figure in Exeter’s attacking threat tonight,

Northampton Form

The Cobblers finished the League Two season seven points behind Exeter and got into the play-offs thanks to two wins in their last four matches, taking seventh place by a point ahead of Port Vale.

They looked out of their play-off semi-final when going down 2-0 at home to Cheltenham in the first leg, but Keith Curle’s men put up one of their best performances of the season in the second leg to run out 3-0 winners. It was a result few pundits could have predicted because Cheltenham had only conceded 27 goals all season but all credit goes to the Northampton players for a great display which saw them muster 25 shots on goal.

Callum Morton, on loan from West Brom, was the hero with two goals and he’ll be looking to carry on that form at Wembley tonight. Nicky Adams have already got 13 assists this season, showing just how important he is to the Cobblers attack.
