Lithuania vs Portugal Predictions

Portugal come into this game as the European and Nations League Champions. They defeated Switzerland with a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick before beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the final. Portugal’s qualification didn’t get off to the best star. Home draws against Ukraine and Serbia so far preceded a 4-2 win in Belgrade to send Portugal second with a game in hand on all three nations beneath them. Ukraine sit atop of group B, eight points ahead, having played two games more. Portugal have the added benefit of a play-off match should they fail to remain in the top two.

Lithuania’s slim hopes of qualification were dashed in their opening match after losing 2-1 away to Luxembourg. They could only manage a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture and have since lost 4-1 to Serbia and 3-0 to Ukraine. Lithuania sit bottom of the group and anything but a win would all but end faint hopes of qualification.

Portugal should have no problems dispatching of Lithuania to strengthen their hold on a qualification spot. Lithuania have scored in three of their games but two of these were against Luxembourg, so we expect them to fail to score as they did last time out against Ukraine.

Fernando Santos’ men are most comfortable scoring with space to exploit in behind. This was evident against Serbia when the game opened up as the Serbs looked for a way back in. Lithuania are unlikely to afford Portugal too much space, so we don’t see this being a goal-laden affair. You’d have to look as far back as August 2017 for the last time Portugal score four times (vs Faroe Islands). Under 3.5 goals is priced at 11/20 with under 2.5 goals an enticing 29/20.

If Portugal are able to break the deadlock in the first half as they did against Serbia, a 1-0 halftime bet looks profitable at 13/8.
