Despite the resurgence of local rivals Man City, you’d be hard pushed to find a United fan who doesn’t call this game their biggest away trip of the year.
The visitors, Man United are offered at 5/4 with Ladbrokes, whereas their opposite number Liverpool are being priced at 15/8 with William Hill. If you think this game will end in a stalemate, you can get odds of 12/5 with SkyBet.
Liverpool-United at Anfield is generally a very tense affair, with both sides setting out not to lose rather than to win, but I see this year being different. Liverpool’s focus has not been on the pitch since the first day of the season, between the changes that Brendan Rodgers has initiated and the court issues surrounding Hillsborough it is easy to forget that Liverpool are yet to win in the Premier League this season and I don’t think that will change after this weekend.
The Liverpool defence, which was their only real pride following last year’s abysmal effort, has suffered this season as they seem uncomfortable when playing in the Rodgers system, highlighted spectacularly in their crumble against WBA after they went a man down. Whereas on the other hand the United attack has shown real potential. They haven’t looked as all-encompassing as Chelsea going forward, but the United front line has a lot more options this season, plus rumours of Wayne Rooney’s return will only boost their hopes this weekend. I can see this one ending up (an uncharacteristic for the fixture) resounding victory for Man United.
Another aspect which I think will hurt Liverpool is the inexperience of Brendan Rodgers. He takes charge of the biggest game of his managerial career without any game to compare this against and is going head to head with a man who is used to the occasion and has taken part in this contest for nearly 26 years. Don’t be surprised to see Fergie ruthlessly exploit Rodgers inexperience and remind fans why he’s one of the best in the game. I think Man United will dominate this game despite being visitors and I expect them to win comfortably.
