Man United v Man City betting tips and predictions for Sunday’s Manchester derby from Old Trafford.
There's a Manchester derby with huge ramifications at the top of the Premier League this weekend. Louis van Gaal's United host Manuel Pellegrini's City at Old Trafford, the match is live on Sky Sports at 16:00 and here are some free football betting tips.
Every year there is usually one team that storms into form come the business end of the season. This year, that team is Manchester United. After months of underwhelming football and some ridiculous managerial excuses, United have really kicked into gear at just the right time.
Having won their last five matches in a row, United currently find themselves in third place. Whilst their fine run has come much to late to challenge Chelsea at the summit of the table, a win this weekend would all but guarantee a spot in the Champions League next season. Despite the unconvincing nature of their victories over Sunderland and Newcastle, their wins over both Tottenham and Liverpool were of the highest quality, LVG's men really seem to raise their game for the big matches.
In stark contrast to their opponents, Manchester City's season is in danger of falling apart. Since the turn of the year, Manuel Pellegrini's men have gone on a rotten run in the Premier League and have only managed five wins from a possible twelve. In addition to this, City were also dumped out of the FA Cup at home to Championship side Middlesbrough, and most recently, crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona. A loss on Sunday could potentially see City hold a mere four point advantage over Liverpool and Tottenham. Should Manchester City not even make the top four, it would be an absolute catastrophe.
Chief culprit for Manchester City's plight has been their away form. The former champions have only won one of their last six matches on the road and lost their last three in a row. Although Monday night's defeat to Crystal Palace could certainly be classed as unfortunate, City will only have themselves to blame for not taking advantage during such a dominant first half. To compound matters in the City camp, striker Sergio Aguero is right in the middle of one of those runs every forward dreads. The Argentine international hasn't scored for six games, it's his worst spell since 2011.
Odds for the derby have very little separating the two sides. Manchester United are very marginal favourites 17/10. Manchester City can be backed at a best price of 15/8, with the draw on offer at 5/2.
As with most derbies, form often goes completely out of the window, which makes a tight match on paper, even tougher to call. Based on United's five match winning streak and City's three consecutive away losses, this should be a no-brainer home win. However, considering the match is a derby and the fact City have won their last four league matches in a row against United, I'm tempted to back the draw with Boylesports at 5/2.
Moving over to the goalscoring market, and Marouane Fellaini has emerged from the shadows in recent weeks and has arguably been United's best player. The Belgian international is playing a similar position to that of his Everton days, and currently has four goals in six matches for club and country. Against a Manchester City side that hasn't kept a clean sheet away from home for seven matches, back Fellaini to score anytime at 10/3 with Paddy Power, and if you're feeling really lucky, anytime with a header at 9/1 with Sky Bet.
