There is nothing riding on this game except pride, with both sides set to miss out on Europa League qualification. Montpellier are currently in fifth place in the table, a place and a point above Friday night’s opponents Marseille. The hosts have had a poor campaign by their standards and there has been some unrest off the pitch with fan protests from the ultras making the Stade Velodrome a very hostile place to play football.

Les Phocéens will be glad to see the back of this season and they just haven’t been able to get a good run together to challenge for the European places. They won their last game 5-2 at Toulouse but before that they’d lost at home to Nantes and Lyon, and drawn away at Strasbourg. That run of results perfectly sums up Marseille’s season – inconsistent. They host Montpellier this weekend who will be happy with their campaign. It will be their highest finish in Ligue 1 for seven years. They’ve recently beaten PSG (3-2), St Etienne (1-0), Strasbourg (3-1) and Toulouse (2-1) and are unbeaten in six matches. They could only manage a draw against Nantes in their final home game of the season and we’re expecting another draw here for our Marseille vs Montpellier prediction.

There haven’t been many clean sheets for either of these teams of late and we’re not expecting any this Friday night either. Montpellier have seen both teams score in five of their last six matches and there has been a winning BTTS bet in five of Marseille’s last six games too. The odds for both teams to score in this match are very short to reflect this. This does give us a clue towards a correct score bet though, and it could be that these two sides play out a draw on the south coast. Marseille’s last match was a 5-2 thriller and if this game is anything like that it should be entertaining, however, for our prediction we’re going to play it safe and bet on a 1-1 draw. This has happened in two of Montpellier’s last three matches and also in one of Marseille’s last three.
