Middlesbrough vs Wigan Preview

It’s been an underwhelming start to the campaign for Jonathon Woodgate and his Middlesbrough side. The local lad has struggled to get a tune out of his young side with the Teessiders losing each of their last two Championship games by a 1-0 scoreline. Boro were excellent in the first half against Brentford although the way they played in the second 45 is a concern. They were outshot 14-9 against Blackburn at the weekend, and once again, they created very little after the break. The fans are enjoying a more entertaining brand of footballer under the former Leeds defender, but how long can their patience last? They have a decent forward line which consists of Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher, but since knocking three past Luton on the opening weekend, they’ve gone over 200 minutes since scoring in the second tier.

Wigan were easily swept aside by Leeds at the weekend with the Latics suffering their second consecutive defeat to nil. They were always up against it once Joe Williams had been dismissed in the first ten minutes, and it was complete domination from start to finish in favour of the away side. Paul Cook’s men made a great start to the campaign with a victory over Cardiff, but they have since been poor, and the Scouser may need to be more adaptable in his approach if the Latics are to avoid relegation. They have a traditionally poor away record, losing 16 of their 23 games on the road last season, and they’ve registered just two away victories since May 2018.

Middlesbrough vs Wigan Betting Tips

Middlesbrough are odds-on for this game, but it is very hard to trust Woodgate’s side on recent evidence. They have the better squad, and they are facing a side who just do not perform on the road. However, Boro always do things the hard way, and it might be a more sensible approach to back the draw.

Wigan traditionally struggle at this ground, but the hosts are lacking in confidence, and neither side will want to extend their losing run. Draw at 12/5 is the best bet.

Wigan have failed to score in their last two games, and the same applies for Middlesbrough. Neither side is seemingly playing with any confidence in the final third, and this is unlikely to be a classic. The last three meetings between these sides at the Riverside have ended 2-0, 1-0 and 0-0 and this is unlikely to be full of goals.

Both Teams to Score? No is tempting, but there is a danger of the 1-1 scoreline. Therefore, we’re backing a slightly shorter price of 8/11 for Under 2.5 Goals.
