Sporting Kansas City v Portland Timbers predictions and betting tips for this weekend’s MLS match live on Sky Sports including.
There’s a double helping of MLS action on Sunday night and it begins with Sporting Kansas City vs Portland Timbers. We’ve got the best bets for the 19:00 kick off.
Sporting KC were excellent seven days ago, but they were made to look good by a woeful Seattle Sounders display. There are real problems for the Sounders and their defence was routinely cut apart by an incisive KC attacking unit. In fact, they will be disappointed they didn’t make it four or five.
Sporting Park has been a pretty happy hunting ground for the hosts this season and despite tough opposition here, they’ll be confident they can continue their unbeaten run here. They’ve won their last four at home, scoring 11 goals in that time and conceding just the three.
Dom Dwyer stole the headlines in last week’s victory and it moves him onto 10 goals for the season. He will face much stiffer opposition from the Timbers defence here.
There is definitely a home bias in the MLS and SKC certainly enjoy playing in front of their own fans with 20 of their 27 goals coming here. Dwyer himself has netted seven of his ten strikes here.
Graham Zusi came off injured which was the only negative from the comprehensive victory. They will be hoping he shakes off a hamstring strain to play some part here. They are already missing Brad Davis, Justin Mapp and Matt Besler through injury.
They are preparing to face the Timbers for the second time in quick succession with the reverse fixture scheduled for just a week later (August 7th). They will be looking to exact revenge on their opponents following their penalty defeat in the Timbers’ run to the MLS Cup victory at the end of last season.
The Timbers had their nine match unbeaten streak ended by the in-form LA Galaxy last weekend. Worryingly though they lost Nat Borchers to a season-ending injury. A huge blow for the side. The bearded centre half is an ever present of the back four and played a vital role in their successful 2015 season.
Their other centre-half Liam Ridgewell is also a doubt for the game and they could be a little short at the back.
Jack Dewsbury and former Vancouver man Darren Mattocks are also set to miss out here.
The Timbers got off to an awful start with three defeats in their opening six games, but have bounced back in style and were looking fairly robust until Galaxy came to town.
Remarkably, they still haven’t won away from home this season, drawing 60% of their games on the road. They’ve had back to back 0-0 draws in their last two away trips, but with few goals on their travels (9), those gaps in the defence could be a huge problem here.
They sit 7th in the Western Conference and are aiming to catch Vancouver Whitecaps, but it’s hard to see them taking anything from this fixture.
After a poor run of form, Sporting KC appear to have regained their swagger. Although last week was a bit of a stroll in the park, they should be able to claim three points with a similar performance here. Portland have been drawing many of their away matches lately, but I think they will feel the absence of Borchers and a possibly half fit Ridgewell may be forced to play. My first Sporting KC vs Portland Timbers Betting Tip is for Sporting KC to win. They are 11/13 with 888 Sport.

Portland are usually good for a goal and they have their own 10 goal man in Fenando Adi. Sporting KC were barely troubled by their opponents last week and they’ll have a little more to contend with this time around. My second Sporting KC vs Portland Timbers betting tip is for Both Teams to Score? Yes. It’s 8/11 with Ladbrokes.

The aforementioned Dom Dwyer should be hungry for more goals. He’s reached double figures and will have plenty of confidence ahead of this one. He likes scoring in front of his own fans. My third Sporting KC v Portland Timbers betting tip is for Dom Dwyer to score anytime. He is 7/5 with Ladbrokes.
