Two of European football’s traditionally top nations go face to face on Monday night and you can read our Portugal vs Italy predictions below – the teams are in the top tier of the new UEFA Nations League and, with Portugal already having drawn to World Cup finalists Croatia whilst the Italians hosted Poland in the opening game.
Although Italy had one day less to prepare for this fixture with their opening game of the Nations League on Friday as opposed to the Thursday kick off the Portuguese squad enjoyed, they were able to rescues a point against a tough Poland side and now they’ll be looking to build on that late goal in their next fixture. They have the more complete squad looking at the players that have been selected and Portugal are now without Ronaldo after the winger was kept out of the selection for this international break. Italy to win is at 11/5 with Ladbrokes and the first prediction for this match.
These nations tend to have very different ideas and ways in which they play the game. Whilst Portugal traditionally tend to focus on attacking with a bit of flair, the Italians prefer a structured, secure and defensively sound line up. Despite this, you can get some good odds for over/under goal totals this weekend with over 2.5 goals at 11/8 with Betfred. Not a bad shout for our Portugal vs Italy predictions considering the talent in both teams.
Similarly to the second prediction we have for you, both squads to score could be a good bet too. Portugal did well to get a 1-1 draw against a very good Croatia side in their first game of the international break and, whilst Italy may be considered lucky to have salvaged a draw on Friday night they certainly are capable of getting at least one goal against this Portuguese squad. Bet365 are offering both teams to score at a price of 11/10 and that completes our match predictions for Portugal vs Italy.

The hosts are the favourites for the game and you can get them to win at 5/4 with William Hill who are also offering 21/10 for a draw after 90 minutes. You ca also get Portugal to win to nil at 12/5 with Betfred or 4/1 for the Italians to win to nil. The most likely score according to the bookies is a 1-0 win for Portugal and Betstars are offering that at 5/1.
As we have already explained, Portugal’s team is absent of Cristiano Ronaldo who was not included in the squad following his move to Juventus this summer. The squad is also without Eder, Anthony Lopes and the experienced Bruno Alves, all three of whom were selected in the World Cup squad.
There were no substantial injuries from Italy’s fixture on Friday night so their squad remains fully available from the initial selection. The big omissions from the squad include Mattia De Sciglio at full back and Claudio Marchisio and Marco Verratti in midfield.
