The lunchtime kickoff sees two sides in surprisingly poor form meet at St James Park, as Newcastle United host Man City.
Man City are the favourites at a best price of 13/19 with Pinnacle, whereas Newcastle can be backed at 24/5 with Stan James. The draw is available at 31/10, again with Pinnacle.
When you consider the relative size of the two teams, their respective league positions last season and their squad makeup, it’s pretty surprising to discover that Newcastle come into this game with one win in their last ten games, and Man City with one win in their last six – and coincidentally, both their wins came against Wigan. In Newcastle’s case the run is made even more suprising by the fact that the only ‘big’ team they have played in the last ten is Liverpool, the games that they have lost have all been eminently winnable. Man city can at least use the excuse that the opposition they have faced in their recent run is stellar in quality, including Dortmund, Chelsea, Man U & Real Madrid, but a team of Man City’s stature should be performing better.
The problem we have here is that you can’t really trust either side here to get a result, and you wouldn’t be massively surprised with any of the three results coming in. If pushed, i’m going to side with Manchester City, because firstly they have a better squad and fewer injuries than Newcastle, and secondly because i reckon that Mancini may have finally twigged that City play best with Carlos Tevez on the pitch, and he’s going to stop indulging Balotelli. I don’t think that City will have it all their own way though, i fancy them to come from behind and win, like they have done numerous times this season, at 8/1 with Paddy Power.
The most obvious scorer for Newcastle is Demba Ba, who has notched 10 goals already this season, and has five in his last six home games in the league. He’s a quite sizable 8/1 with Bet365 to score first, when you consider that the likes of Tevez are best priced 4/1 to open the scoring. Tevez will score at some point though, back him to score anytime at 11/8 with SkyBet.
