Newcastle vs Wigan Betting Tips and Match Preview

Newcastle have hit the wall over the last month, both in their results and their ever-growing injury list. Key first team regulars Steven Taylor and Johann Cabaye are now out until well into the new year, leaving Alan Pardew’s resources threadbare, particularly in midfield.

They meet a Wigan side on Monday night who have frustrated their fans of late, mixing impressive performances against Spurs and Reading with insipid displays against Liverpool and West Brom. Their unpredictably makes them potentially awkward opponents for any team in the Premier League, and encourages punters who like taking on an odds-on home favourite.

Much has been made of the lack of genuine strike partnerships in the modern era, yet the burgeoning one between Kone and Di Santo has lead manager Roberto Martinez the option of starting both in front of a four-man midfield, something he may do if Wigan look to attack what they perceive to be a vulnerable opponent. Newcastle’s Tiote, recently returned from injury and suspension, will also be key to nullifying the threat Wigan carry from Jordi Gomes in midfield, who has 3 league goals already this year and is currently the clubs top goalscorer.

Wigan are ever increasingly easy on the eye going forward under Martinez, but remain prone to error at the back, and away from home haven’t kept a clean sheet away from home since August. Newcastle’s Papisse Cisse and Demba Ba provide a significant challenge to any defence as well as the promise of a physical encounter. They also enable Newcastle to play a more direct style even when not keeping the ball well, which will always give them a foothold in any game.

Both teams possess the ability to score goals. The romantic in me is desperate to back an away win, given Wigan’s threat going forward and Newcastle’s wretched run. However, even without Taylor, the likes of Krul, Collocini and Tiote give a defensive steel that Wigan simply don’t possess away from the JJB, making a scoring draw look a more likely outcome. In the first goalscorer market, it is hard to look past the often majestic Ba, but Aruna Kone is on a good run at the moment and will certainly offer more value.
