Newport vs Mansfield Preview

Mike Flynn’s Newport have been one of the great stories of the last couple of seasons. They have a low budget, but no amount of money can buy their level of spirit and togetherness. They have beaten Middlesbrough, Leicester and draw with Spurs in the FA Cup in recent years, whilst they also managed to sneak into the play-offs despite playing more games than any other side in the division. Dan Butler and Joe Day have left the club, but Flynn has moved quickly to replace the outgoing duo, and he’s retained the nucleus of the squad which finished seventh last season. Tom King is a perfectly adequate replacement, and he excelled at AFC Wimbledon. Kyle Howkins, Ryan Hayes and Lazar Stojsavljevic all add quantity at the back Tristan Abrahams should add some muscle up top. Many are tipping Newport to have another decent campaign, and it remains to be seen how they cope with that level of expectation. Knowing Mike Flynn, he is likely to play it down, and harness that winning mentality all over again.

Mansfield sacked David Flitcroft after their failure to reach the play-offs, and he has been replaced by John Dempster. The new man steps up from managing the academy, and he has been well-backed by the Radfords. They’ve added Andy Cook, who is a nuisance, and Nicky Maynard, and the pair should combine to make a formidable striking duo. There are questions over the ability of Dempster to manage some of the egos in the squad, but the early signs are promising. They still have the likes of Neal Bishop and Jacob Mellis in the side whilst Mal Benning will provide some athleticism on the left. Kellan Gordon is the latest addition, and should get plenty of game time this season. I’ve seen lots of experts tipping Mansfield for promotion this season, and the owners will be hoping that their investment has paid off. They won’t have many harder fixtures than this opener, and even if they can’t pick up maximum points here, they should go well during the early part of the campaign.

Newport vs Mansfield Betting Tips

Newport’s home form was pretty formidable last season, and very few sides left Rodney Parade with anything to show for it. Even Premier League sides struggled in South Wales, and if the crowd get behind the hosts, they should easily be able to get something from this opening day tie. MK Dons were the only side to have won here in 2019, and Mansfield don’t look like adding their name to that list. It ended 1-1 here last season in the play-offs, and a similar outcome is predicted this time around. The draw is 23/10, and that looks like the best outcome on the 1X2 market.

Both sides have a number of new recruits who will be settling into their new surroundings, and Newport could have a new-look defence for this game. Although they kept things tight, they were involved in a number of highscoring games at Rodney Parade, and this could be a hugely entertaining affair. Both Teams to Score? Yes landed when they met at the end of last season, and I expect a similar result this weekend.
