Portsmouth vs Tranmere Preview

Pompey were beaten by Shrewsbury on the opening day of the season, but it’s difficult to read too much into that defeat. Sam Rickett’s men will be more than a match for many sides in Shropshire this campaign, and they were beaten by a Ryan Giles wondergoal. Kenny Jackett’s men competed admirably, but they were just lacking that spark in the final third. In midweek, a much-changed side beat Birmingham in the EFL Cup, although the likes of Ellis Harrison and Ben Close put themselves in contention with all-important strikes. They have plenty of options going forward, and the experienced boss must learn to manage his squad, and keep everyone happy. They’ve won four of their last five opening games at Fratton Park, and although their home form was mixed last year, they will be confident of taking three points from this clash.

Tranmere were well-fancied going into their opening day fixture with Rochdale, but the men from the Wirral fell short. They conceded three times, with Ian Henderson a thorn in their side all afternoon, however they got going late on, and that gives them something to build upon. They were so effective at Prenton Park last season, but their away form was concerning with just seven victories from 25 matches. They have added Jacob Maddox on loan this week, and he could go straight into this squad, whilst they will also need to find a way of replacing the goals of James Norwood. They were actually the better side throughout that game, and although he didn’t find the net, Stefan Payne proved to be a handful for the Dale defence.

Portsmouth vs Tranmere Betting Tips

Pompey are fancied by the bookies, and they are odds-on for success here. Kenny Jackett rotated his squad on Tuesday night, so we can expect some fresh legs coming back into the squad for this fixture. They should have too much energy in the final third for Tranmere, and backing them to win with Over 1.5 Goals in the game looks the best way of extracting some value. Coral have the best price of Evens, and new customers can get a £20 free bet when they sign up for an account.

Tranmere struggled at the back against Rochdale last week, and they’ll need to tighten up against one of the pre-season favourites.

It’s difficult to read too much into Pompey’s opening day defeat, and I’m sure they will have been working on their finishing this week. If they aren’t firing, they have plenty of players who can come on and change the game. With Ellis Harrison, Brett Pitman, John Marquis and Oli Hawkins in the squad, they have plenty of options up top. Tranmere will also provide a threat of their own, and Over 2.5 Goals looks a likely outcome here.
