PSV finished 2nd in the Dutch League last season, behind an Ajax team that shocked the world by getting to the Champions League semifinals. Despite their better domestic record in recent years, PSV haven’t been able to go far in European competitions unlike Ajax with their 1977/78 Uefa Cup win and 1987/88 European Cup win far behind them.

PSV had the best defense in the Eredivisie and the 2nd best attack powered by their talented young wingers Lozano and Bergwijn who look to be staying for another season. However, they have lost their top goal scorer in Luuk De Jong and left-back Angelino.

FC Basel too reached this stage by finishing 2nd in their league. They have had some decent European seasons, reaching the knockout stages every year since 2011/12 except 2016/17, including a 2nd leg win over Manchester City last season despite losing the tie overall.
