Reading entertain Tottenham this weekend as both sides look to secure their first win of the Premier League campaign and the betting odds suggest a tight affair, with Tottenham coming out on top eventually.
After the postponement of their last fixture away to Sunderland, this will be the home side’s first league game since the defeat away to Chelsea over three weeks ago. Spurs’ form going into the game has been poor – an opening day loss at Newcastle has been followed by two hugely disappointing and drab draws at home to likely strugglers West Brom and Norwich.
Consolidation of last year’s qualification for the Champions League, though their spot was eventually taken by Chelsea, was surely the primary aim at White Hart Lane this season. However, the sparkling form of the West London side, coupled with their lacklustre form, has completely decreased such aspirations of many fans. The two consecutive home draws were surely fixtures the side expected to gain six points from and with games against Manchester United and Chelsea within their next four fixtures, it is almost imperative Spurs pick up a win this weekend.

Clint Dempsey, who was superb last season where he bagged seventeen goals, is in line to make his debut for the side. Despite having not played all summer, he returned to action for the US midweek against Jamaica and promptly scored after thirty-six seconds. Fans hope he will provide the spark the side have lacked so far, along with the reintroduction of Emmanuel Adebayor after his successful loan spell last season. Hugo Lloris could make his debut too, though the superb form of Brad Friedel surprisingly means that the French number one may have to wait on the bench for a little bit longer.
Despite suffering defeat at Stamford Bridge, Reading’s defeat was hugely encouraging, as it seemed to demonstrate that they were more than capable of competing against any side in the league. Keeper Adam Federici made another mistake that led to a goal however , so it will be interesting to see if he retains his place in the side. Pavel Pogrebnyak will surely be hoping to add more goals to his tally too after his superb header against the Blues.
It has been thirty-four league games since Reading were involved in a 0-0 draw so goals seem the most likely outcome. The quality of Spurs’ side mean they must be the favourites for the game and they are at 11/10 with Stan James (free £10 bet here). Reading can be found at 3/1 with Bet Victor (free £25 bet here) and the draw is 5/2 with Ladbrokes.
Despite Spurs’ lack of potency in front of goal so far, the introduction of Dempsey and Adebayor into the attack means I’m backing them for a 2-0 win – 11/1 at Betfair. For first goalscorer, the new signings can be found at 8/1 (William Hill) and 13/2 (Coral) respectively.
