Weekend football betting tips for Republic of Ireland v Poland in Sunday’s Euro 2016 qualifier with a betting preview.
Poland travel to Dublin looking to defend an unbeaten record as well as top spot in Group D. A win for the Irish would take them level on points with Poland and Martin O’Neill’s men are looking to bounce back after their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Scotland in November.
Having lost to Gordon Strachan’s men in their previous match, the Republic know that they need to win this match to keep pressure on the Scots who will surely pick up all three points against a woeful Gibraltar side. Martin O’Neill’s men come into the International break with some injury concerns in the squad, with Jon Walters, Aiden McGeady, Robbie Brady and Glenn Whelan remaining with the team despite being injury doubts.
The Republic began their qualifying campaign well with a 2-1 victory in Georgia, followed by a comprehensive 7-0 demolition of new boys Gibraltar. Their most surprising result came away to Germany where they managed to hold the World Champions to a 1-1 draw and they took great confidence from this hard fought point. However, away to the Scots, they could not muster the same kind of spirit and were edged out of the game by a late Shaun Maloney goal. They sit 4th in the group, level on points with Scotland and Germany but below them both on goal difference. A win in Dublin on Sunday would see them level on points with current table toppers Poland.
Poland are looking a real force in qualifying so far; they matched Ireland’s 7-0 score line over Gibraltar and followed this up with a massively impressive 2-0 home win over Joachim Low’s World Champions in Warsaw. Scotland managed to hold the Poles to a 2-2 draw but a subsequent 4-0 win in Georgia means that Poland have dropped just 2 points and sit at the top of group D. With 15 goals scored and 2 conceded, Poland will be a real test for Martin O’Neill’s side.
The teams last met at The Aviva in February 2013 in a friendly and The Republic came away with a 2-0 victory. However there is much more pressure on the hosts in this qualifying clash. Ireland will start the match as favourites given their home advantage but with Poland’s fine form, as well as their hugely significant win over the Germans, I expect the Poles to give Ireland a thorough examination. The Irish crowd will give their team a big boost, but ultimately I see this game being too tight to call.
Therefore my Rep of Ireland v Poland betting tip is for the match to end as a draw. Odds of 9/4 can be found with 888sport.
With both teams having good goal differences, thanks in no small part to their victories over Gibraltar, I can see both teams scoring in the game.
