Scunthorpe vs Derby County Preview
Scunthorpe have not made the best start to life back in League Two, and Paul Hurst was left visibly frustrated by his side’s performance against Cheltenham at the weekend. Scunny have now lost back-to-back matches, and Hurst has called for reinforcements. The Iron look desperately short on creativity and firepower, and the return to full fitness of Ryan Colclough cannot come soon enough. Adam Hamill is a talented individual, but he could be set for the exit door before the end of the month. Worringly, Scunny had an XG of just 0.8 at the weekend, and they need to be better if they have any hopes of mounting a promotion push. Hurst has his work cut out, although this EFL Cup may come as a welcome distraction from their underwhelming start to the season. The former Shrewsbury boss could opt to shuffle his pack, and give some fringe players a start. He is also likely to make some changes for this weekend’s home match against Crawley, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a few players come back in from the cold here.

Derby County were one of the unluckiest sides in the Championship at the weekend. They completely dominated Swansea, and although Steve Cooper’s side did look very dangerous on the counter-attack, the Rams really should have put the game to bed. With an XG of 2.3 in that game, Phillip Cocu’s side created numerous chances, but couldn’t find a way past Freddie Woodman in the Swans goal. Martyn Waghorn also missed a penalty in that clash, and they will be desperate to make amends for that profligate 90 minutes. Cocu us highly likely to make changes with Jayden Bogle definitely not fit enough to take part. Fans will be hoping to see a little more of Jack Marriott, who is making his return from a niggly injury, whilst the likes of Max Lowe and Mason Bennett are also likely to feature. Derby had a very good run in this competition last season, which included squeezing past Manchester United on penalties. They’ll be hoping to repeat their cup heroics this season, albeit with a different manager and much-changed squad.
Scunthorpe vs Derby County Betting Tips
At this early stage of the season, shocks do tend to occur in this competition, but it seems unlikely that Scunny have enough confidence or togetherness to oust Derby. Even with some changes, the Rams have a large enough and strong enough squad to see them off. Although bigger prices are available on the handicaps, I’m happy with a straightforward 90 minute victory for the Rams at 5/6.
Mason Bennett is likely to be given the nod here, and he could be the best option in the anytime goalscorer market. He scored three times last season, and has featured for just 16 minutes so far this year. He’s 15/8 with Paddy Power, and looks a decent option.
