Zenit St Petersburg vs Liverpool Preview, Betting Tips and Prediction

Liverpool are in action for the second time in three days as they travel to Russia to face Zenit in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Zenit start as 5/4 favourites to win the match, whilst Liverpool can be backed at 9/4 as can the draw.  All odds quoted are available with Bet365.

Liverpool will need to bounce back quickly from a disappointing home defeat to West Brom on Monday if they are to take anything away from their sojourn to St Petersburg.  The Reds have not proved to be the best of travellers in 2013 either, winning only one of their five away matches in all competitions since the turn of the year.   However, Liverpool’s Europa League run to date has been decent, finishing top of their group and defeating Young Boys, Anzhi and Udinese along the way.

Zenit failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, and so by default, drop into the latter stages of the Europa League.  However make no mistake, Zenit are quality opposition.  They have a European record stretching back to 2008 that reads (at home), played 19, won 14, drawn four and lost one.  Zenit are also the reigning Russian Premier League champions, and lie in third place in the league in this season’s domestic campaign.

Thursday’s game will be Zenit and Liverpool’s first ever meeting, and at the prices I am inclined to take a punt on the Russians who are odds against.  And although correct score betting is dangerous territory in the Europa League, a 1-0 win for Zenit at 6/1 appeals.
