Royal Ascot Day 1 Betting Tips 2020

  • 1.15pm – DAARIK 5/1 and STRAIGHT RIGHT 33/1 EW
  • 1.50pm – FOX CHAIRMAN 8/1 (EW)
  • 2.25pm – FRANKLY DARLING 7/4 NB
  • 3.00pm – MOGUL 5/6
  • LIBERTY BEACH 4/1 (without Battaash)
  • 4.10pm – NAZEEF 10/3
  • 4.40pm – VERDANA BLUE 4/1 NAP

1.15pm Royal Ascot Each-way Tip

The opener is a tough handicap race over the 7f distance known as the Buckingham Palace handicap.

I’m happy to back Frankie and John Gosden to get off to a strong start here with DAARIK 5/1. I was impressed with the horse last time out staying on well to race victory. There has to be more improvement and he could arguably be a group horse in a handicap. The bounce factor is an obvious concern but the same can be said for many horses throughout the meeting so I’m happy to take a chance.

I will also have a small e/w nibble at STRAIGHT RIGHT 33/1 EW for the Andrew Balding/De Sousa combination. Straight Right has a nice draw and I can see him bowling along out in front and he could easily keep running and bag is a place. Straight Right has won six times in the past, all-being all on the AW but it shows he knows his job and at 33/1 with 5 places on offer I’m happy to have a small nibble.

1.50pm Ascot Day 1 Each-way Tip

My first selection comes in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes over Ascot’s straight mile. Circus Maximus currently leads the market at 9/4 and he is probably the right favourite in what is potentially a weak renewal of the race. Circus Maximus won the St James Palace Stakes at this meeting last year and the O’Brien team believed he is ready to go for this season opener. Gosden and Dettori team up with Terebellum who won for us last time out and he must have a strong chance here.

The one I am swaying towards is FOX CHAIRMAN 8/1 (EW). Fox Chairman has untapped potential and has improved with every run. This is another step up for him here but I think he is up to this class and the race should be run to suit. Balding is absolutely flying at the moment and De Sousa is obviously jocked up for the King Power team. This son of Kingman has to be a cracking e/w bet here at 8/1.

2.25pm Ascot Day 1 Next Best Tip

The 2.25 at Ascot is the Ribblesdale Stakes. It is a Group 2 race for the fillies over 1m3f and it has become an Oaks trail this year. It is a great renewal of the race with Gosden, O’Brien and Beckett trained horses towards the front of the market.

The one for me here is FRANKLY DARLING 7/4 NB. I was really impressed with this daughter of Frankel last time out when she powered clear at Newcastle and I think she’ll turn out to be a really smart filly who will go on to run a big race in the Oaks after here. I’m sure there is definitely more improvement to come. Gosden and Dettori team up together here and I think they can get on the scoresheet with this unexposed filly.

Current BEST ODDS – 7/4 with bet365.

3.00pm Ascot Day 1 Tip

The 3.00 race is the King Edward VII Stakes for the Colts and this year at Ascot it is a Derby trial. Only six go the past for this one but it is hard to get away from the favourite MOGUL 5/6. Mogul was a Group 2 winner over the 1m distance last season and being a half-brother to the stable star Japan this step up in trip should bring out significant improvement. He’s also in our Royal Ascot 2020 day 1 lucky 15 betting tip. The other runners in the line-up’s form isn’t as strong as Mogul and the Coolmore team are confident this is their Derby horse. If that’s the case, he has to win here. One for the multiples.

3.35pm Ascot Tip

The 3.35 race is a 5f race for our top sprinters known as the Kings Stand Stakes.

Red hot favourite Battaash will prove very tough to beat here if on song. Many people will take him on due to the fact he’s never won as Ascot but the form of his previous runs here will be good enough to win this. He’ll prove tough to beat.

The bet for me will be in the ‘without the fav’ market. The horse for me is LIBERTY BEACH 4/1 WITHOUT BATTAASH. The horse won well last time out to show he’s trained on well from an impressive display last season. The John Quinn teams’ horses are running well and I can see Liberty Beach staying on well and running on for second here as the horse has good form over 6f too. Good bet with the 3-year-old weight allowance.

4.10pm Ascot Day 1 Tip

The 4.10 at Ascot is a race for the fillies and mares over the straight mile and it looks a strong Group 2 on paper.

Jubiloso has been well found in the market for the Sir Michael Stoute team after running a huge race at Ascot last season coming 3rd in the Coronation Stakes. Stoute reports the horse to be in rude form and he is likely to put up a bold bid.

The one I like is the completely unexposed NAZEEF 10/3 for the Gosden. Nazeef won well on his reappearance and Gosden said she would come on a lot for the run which is a significant positive. I think she is a top-notch filly and will prove that with a victory here before going on to bigger and better things. Gosden also put this filly up as his charity bet for the week during a preview night.

4.40pm Royal Ascot Day 1 NAP

The finale on the first day is a 2m3f race known as the Ascot Stakes. I’m praying there is no rain throughout the day as VERDANA BLUE 4/1 NAP is a good thing for me if there is none. Verdana Blue is a quality performer over hurdles when she gets her conditions and if there is no rain at Ascot these conditions will be absolutely perfect for her. She appears a class apart on paper and Ryan Moore takes the ride. Moore has a fantastic record in the race and I’m sure Nicky Henderson isn’t sending the horse for a day out. The trip should be no problem for her with her jumps background and has a Group 3 fourth to her name on her last flat start. No rain, we lump.

Current BEST ODDS – 4/1 with bet365.
