Royal Ascot 2020 Day 2 Betting Tips – Through the Card Selections on Wednesday 17th June
This year may be slightly different with Royal Ascot as the Top Hats have been replaced by facemasks but one thing still remains; it is still the biggest week of the Flat racing calendar.
I will dissect and preview the 7-race card and break down some of the key runners in my eyes and pick out the best Royal Ascot day 2 tips and selections.

13.15 Silver Royal Hunt Cup Handicap 1m
In the first race we have 24 declared runners with current market favourite Ouzo, trained by R Hannon and Ryan Moore on board. He’s currently 6/1 with most bookies and was a useful handicapper last year. He has won three times from 7f to 1m on good and soft ground. After 7 months off he ran an impressive second of 10 in a 1m run at Newmarket 10 days ago when beaten by a neck to Bell Rock. Connections will be confident that Ouzo will carry that momentum here as he remains at the same mark. He should be able to get into his stride very quickly as he is drawn two stalls away from Zhui Feng who likes to lead from the front. Ouzo will be a big player in this.
Zhui Feng who was mentioned above is one who likes to set the pace as a front runner but he hasn’t won a handicap for a little while. But with that said he is down to a workable mark but I think others are preferred.
MAYDANNY won on his latest outing at Yarmouth over 1m 14 days ago beating Arigato by 4l. He is a horse who has progressed on every run and his victory came on his handicap debut. He is a half brother to Elargam who is a superstar in the Mark Johnston stable. There is a lot more of this horse to come and with the experienced Jim Crowley on board. They will give it to Ouzo for sure. So my tip is MAYDANNY but I am going to tip an each-way shot in SUCELLUS who is currently 25/1 with bet365 but as low as 16/1 currently with Paddy Power. He was a horse picked up on the cheap from John Godsen. Now trained by R G Fell. He won on his last start for Gosden but was 6th of 12 at Newcastle over 1m 2f 15 days ago and it was suggested that the run was needed. That was the only race out of his 6 runs that he has failed to place in and with dropping down in the trip and has low mileage and weight is in favour as well (9st 4lbs).
13.50 Hampton Court Stakes (Group 3) 1m 1f
Looking to achieve a winner for the Queen Mother is FIRST RECEIVER, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by Frankie Dettori. He was a winner when last seen 15 days ago at Kempton over 1m beating Defence Girl by 7f. He took a big step forward in his progression in that run and he should have even more to offer as the run at Kempton was prep for today. He is stepping up in trip but I believe the danger in the race against him is Russian Emperor with Ryan Moore on board and A P O’Brian trained. He got off the mark at Naas over 1m and that was over 1m on heavy ground. He was runner up last week to stablemate Cormorant when 2nd of 5 at Leopardstown and is set for another big run.
Berlin Tango will also look to be part of the run-in. A winner 14 days ago at Kempton, beating Pyledriver by 1 1/4l. With Champion jockey Oisin Murphy on board he will look to make a challenge.
But I am going for FIRST RECEIVER. Connections won the race last race with Sangaruis and I believe they will edge this again.
14.25 King George V Stakes (Handicap) 1m 3f 211y
Top of the market betting for Royal Ascot is Kipps who is looking to win of a low mark of 8st 4lbs
He is a winner at 1m 2f on the AW. He was beaten by a nose when second last time out Haydock and will look to have another big run here. Convict is another who will look to go well for William Haggas and Tom Marquand who has improved on each of his runs and it is expected to improve for that.
But my Selection is BRIGHT MELODY who made a winning start at Chelmsford in January and made an encouraging run at Kempton 14 days ago when 3rd to Berlin Tango over 1m 2f.
He is wearing cheekpieces for the first time and he will suit to the extra furlong.
Outsiders to watch in the betting market are To Nathaniel for John Gosden and R Havlin currently 11/1 with Ladbrokes, Group One Power currently 25/1 with Bet365 and Win O’clock currently 8/1 with Coral.
15.00 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes( Group 1) 1m 1f 212y
In the big race of the day, Japan is the big name at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. He will be many’s bet of the day and I believe he is the banker of the day, but I am tipping the race in the betting without Japan. The connections for Addeybb will be hoping for a bit of rain which is forecasted so they will have fingers crossed for that and he will be a big player in this for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. He was a winner last time when seen at Rosehill over 1m 2f beaten Veery Elleegant by 1/2L. But I am going for the lesser-known LORD NORTH with James Doyle and the trainer John Gosden who enjoyed his 50th success of Ascot yesterday.
Suggestions are that this may be a little quick for him but he was last seen beating Elarqam by a head 10 days ago. He is a winner of 5 races from 1m to 1m 2f on ground varying from good to heavy and on the All-Weather. He is a class act and is a good E/W bet as well currently at 5/1 with William Hill if you bet without Japan.
15.35 Royal Hunt Cup 1m
23 runners are currently declared for the race and with some bookies paying 7 places this race could toss up any result but for me BELL ROCK, who beat Ouzo by a neck at Newmarket over 1m is the Ascot day 2 tip. He is carrying a 5lb penalty for that run, but he could well overcome that. With both jockey Oisin Murphy and trainer Andrew Baldwin in form. He is expected to offer more and be a big player here.
Lord Tennyson is another to look at the current favourite at 7/1 with William Hill, he is a little inexperienced but was second to Marie’s Diamond over 1m at Newmarket 12 days ago, he is another who can be a big player and will be sure to be involved in the run-in.
Dark Vision is currently 12/1 and will be a good E/W bet. He has been unlucky in his last couple of runs but he is one to watch and gives trainer Mark Johnson his best chance for a win in this race.
16.10 Windsor Castle Stakes 5f
Expected to be a quick race Ryan Moore and Aiden O’Brian will look to win the Windsor Castle Stakes back to back with Chief Little Hawk who is currently the betting market favourite for the second last race here.
He has a speedy pedigree and with the booking of Moore on board, it is a bold one. He was a winner when seen at Navan on debut beating The Blue Panther by 1 1/4l on good to firm ground. He will use that run to his advantage and look to be a main challenger.
Tactical is another expected player in this who made a good account of himself on his debut at Newmarket when 3rd 13 days ago. This is the second runner of the day for the Queen and has a good chance for trainer A Balding and Jockey James Doyle.
But I am tipping a horse to win and an each way betting tip. My selection to win is SUNSHINE CITY for trainer Wesley Ward and the ever-present Frankie Dettori. He was a winner on debut at Gulfstream in April when Evens favourite over 4f.
It’s a step up in furlong but this horse is expected to be a flyer and with stablemate Sheriff Blanco they will be both ones to watch.
My each-way bet is MIGHTY GURKHA who was a winner over 6f at Lingfield beaten Scoop by 8l 12 days ago. Trainer Archie Watson is in good form but Jockey Hollie Doyle has lit up the track since the return of racing in Britain and I think will give another showing of why she is one of the top jockeys in the country.
16.40 Copper Horse Handicap 1m 6f 34y
In the last race of the day at Royal Ascot I like the look of RANCH HAND trained by A M Balding and for Jockey David Probert. He has won 3 times from 1m 3f to 1m 6f on soft ground and on the all-weather. With rain falling and more rain expected. He will like the ground on the softer side. The horse didn’t run great when last seen at Newmarket in October. He will be one to get involved in the run in and I feel he has a good chance.
Alright Sunshine, at 11/1, has placed in 11 of 12 runs and won 7 of them on ground varying from good to firm to soft and won three NH flat races. One for a good solid E/W bet and one who will get involved for trainer Keith Dalgleish. Selino will be another to check in the market as well as Colide but i am going for RANCH HAND.
