Royal Ascot 2020 Day 2 Lucky 15 Tips: Wednesday 17th June

Royal Ascot tips

The highlight of Day 2 at Royal Ascot will be the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes featuring the highly-regarded Japan from the Aidan O’Brien yard.

He faces some quality opposition and that contest is included among the three other races from the meeting in this Royal Ascot day 2 lucky 15 tip. All of the main contenders are discussed below to help with selecting four horses for a Lucky 15 with each race televised on ITV Racing.

Hampton Court Stakes – 1.50 Ascot

A competitive renewal is expected for this 1m2f Group 3 contest, and Juan Elcano will hope to gain compensation for a decent fourth-placed effort in the recent 2,000 Guineas. He had previously finished just a length behind Threat in Doncaster’s Champagne Stakes last September.

Among his opponents will be First Receiver who bypassed the ‘Guineas’ to claim a seven lengths victory at Kempton, although the quality of the opposition may not have been that great.

Russian Emperor from the Aidan O’Brien yard will be another challenger but he appeared slightly one-paced when second in the recent Derrinstown Derby Trial at Leopardstown while Berlin Tango will appear just two weeks after scoring in a Group 3 contest at Kempton on his seasonal reappearance. Trainer Andrew Balding has saddled several recent winners.

Tip – Berlin Tango to win.

King George V Stakes (Handicap) – 2.25 Ascot

This Class 2 handicap over 1m4f will be a competitive affair but Kipps earns respect after suffering a narrow defeat at Haydock during the first week of June. Although this race is a tougher contest, he will be fitter for that outing.

Joint bottom weight Win O’Clock should also be a contender and a recent Haydock victory allowed his participation in this race by virtue of a penalty. He could progress further over this distance.

Among the other contenders is Bright Melody who finished well when beaten by Berlin Tango at Kempton and the extra distance will suit. He won his only other race at Chelmsford while To Nathaniel scored at Kempton last Friday but in a Class 4 handicap.

Tip – Bright Melody to Win.

Prince Of Wales’s Stakes – 3.00 Ascot

The feature Group 1 race of today’s card is staged over 1m2f and Japan is expected to start favourite after winning at this meeting last season and then completing victory in the Juddmonte International at York. He was by no means disgraced when finishing fourth in the Prix De l’Arc De Triomphe.

Although the Aidan O’Brien colt will be difficult to beat, Barney Roy was a Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot back in 2017 and won twice at Meydan earlier this year. One of those victories was a Group 1 event when beating Magic Lily.

Addeybb could also be a lively contender but he has yet to win a race at this level apart from an event in Australia back in March. Meanwhile, Headman won a couple of Group 2 contests last Summer in France but produced a slightly disappointing fifth-placed performance in the Irish Champion Stakes.

Tip – Japan to Win.

Royal Hunt Cup – 3.35 Ascot

One of the more difficult races to predict with this Class 2 handicap staged over the straight mile at the course. Lord Tennyson from the John Gosden yard could start favourite after finishing second behind the useful Marie’s Diamond at Newmarket. He had comfortably won at Chelmsford earlier this year.

In opposition will be Bell Rock from the Andrew Balding stable. He raced among decent company last season without troubling the judges but then claimed a Newmarket prize earlier this month at a similar level to this event. The manner in which he strongly finished that race suggests there is more improvement to come.

Top-weighed Alrajaa should also be considered after winning his last four races and is saddled by John Gosden. This consistent gelding won at Kempton last time at Class 2 level and was a comfortable winner of that contest.

There is also a case for Montatham who was a recent three lengths winner at Newmarket but may need more improvement to win at this grade, although he is one of the lighter-weighted horses.

Tip – Bell Rock to Win.
