Royal Ascot Day 3 Tips – Through the Card Betting Tips on Thursday 18th June
The opener on Day 3 is the Golden Gates Handicap over 1m1f and it is another wide-open betting market. Acquitted for the Hugo Palmer team leads the market at 4/1 and will prove popular for many after a pleasing comeback run behind Palace Pier at Newcastle.

Royal Ascot Day 3 Tips
1.15pm – YA HAYATI 12/1 EW & GRAND ROCK 10/1 EW

2.25pm – KING LEONIDAS 3/1 WIN
3.00pm – MODERN NEWS 3/1 NB

4.40pm – AFRICAN DREAM 7/4 NAP
1.15 Ascot
I like YA HAYATI 12/1 EW for the Charlie Appleby team. Ya Hayati was poor last time out at Meydan but I’m happy to put that down to it being his first run on the dirt and my guess is he hated it. He shown useful progressive form on the turf prior to that and hopefully, that can continue here on his return to the turf. Drawn 1 is a slight concern but at least he will have the rail to help and hopefully, James Doyle can get us a winner here.
Two selections for me in the opener in case we have a draw bias. The other horse I like is drawn in stall 17 and it is GRAND ROCK 10/1 EW. William Haggas’ horses have been running well and he teams up with young Cieren Fallon here who claims 3lbs. The horse has been progressing well throughout his short career upto now winning his second and third start and then running well finishing third last time out. The horse was staying on well there and this step up in trip is sure to suit.
1.50 Ascot
The Wolferton Stakes comes next over the same distance. Fox Tal leads the way for the Balding team and he shown useful form finishing 4th in the Champion Stakes over C+D last time out. He will do for many but I am happy to look elsewhere here.
The horse I like is MOUNTAIN ANGEL 14/1 EW. Mountain Angel was unlucky in this race last year finishing 5th but getting no run whatsoever. The horse has a strong record fresh and this course winner has James Doyle up here which is an eye-catching jockey booking for the Roger Varian team.
2.25 Ascot
The 2.25 race is the Jersey Stakes over 6f and is a Group 3 contest. Celestin comes over from France and he is progressing well and is sure to put up a bold bid here but the one for me is the unbeaten Gosden horse KING LEONIDAS 3/1 WIN. King Leonidas has won his two starts at Newmarket well and looks a very smart horse. This son of Kingman looks sure to continue to progress for his master trainer and I think Dettori can get off the mark on day 3 here.
3.00 Ascot
The Chesham Stakes is up next and this is a Listed race over the 7f distance. Godolphin and the Coolmore team are amongst the market leaders and what looks a hot little race. First Prophet was one that interested me as he won well last Friday lading a huge gamble first out. I think he will improve with racing and should run a good race here but may just come up short.
The horse I like is MODERN NEWS 3/1 NB. I was impressed with this Sharmadal colt last time out staying on strongly to win at Newmarket. He looks a smart horse going forward and I think he will come on for that run and win well here.
3.35 Ascot
The feature on Day 3 is the Gold Cup where Stradavarius is aiming to win his third. It is a very weak renewal and I’d be shocked if he didn’t manage to win here. I think if he runs 80% near his best he wins but he is no betting opportunity at 1/2.
The forecast rain will suit Technician 13/2 EW who stayed on well to win a Group 1 race in France last time out. The forecast rain is certainly in his favour and he has to be the least exposed horse in the race and could be the one to serve it up to Stradavarius if he runs below par. Oisin Murphy takes the ride which is a positive. Worth a small e/w punt or betting without the fav.

4.10 Ascot
The 4.10 race is the Britannia Stakes and is one of the toughest handicaps throughout the meeting. It is another case of picking one from each side of the draw here for me. The first selection is ENEMY 6/1 WIN for Qatar Racing. Trained by John Gosden, ridden by Oisin Murphy the horse shaped well winning first time out before a slightly disappointing second career start. 7f is far too short for this horse so this step up to a strong run 1m should help and he’ll be staying on strongly as he is bred to be suited by middle distance races. The forecast rain shouldn’t be an issue as it’ll assist Enemy’s stamina.
I will have a small e/w nibble on HES A KEEPER 40/1 EW. Trained by Tom Dascombe, ridden by Richard Kingscote a combination in rude form as of late. This horse ran well at 2 over the 1m on soft ground which is an obvious plus here and I’m happy to ignore his comeback run on the A/W now he’s returning to the turf here. He has plenty of experience which will help in a big field like this and 40/1 is more than fair.
4.40 Ascot
The finale at Ascot is the Sandringham Stakes over the straight mile. I really like the favourite here AFRICAN DREAM 7/4 NAP. This filly ran well despite drifting on the day finishing second behind the proven Stylistique giving the Varian horse bundles of weight. The drift on the day suggests she was expected to come on for that run and she looks well in here sneaking in near the bottom of the weights. The ground should hold no fears and Gosden can finish Day 3 with another winner.
