Cheltenham Day 1 Tips from Blair White’s Blog Video Preview
Horse racing tipster and blogger Andrew Blair White has taken a look at day 1 of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival and in his video preview he’s picked out the best Cheltenham day 1 tips for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, the Arkle, Champion Hurdle, Mare’s Hurdle and the National Hunt Chase.
Be sure to give Andrew’s blog a follow on Youtube by subscribing to his channel where you will get all his Cheltenham Festival video previews.
As well as Andrew’s tips there is also some in-depth reasons behind his selections and you can watch the full video below as well as all his selections and betting tips for day 1.
Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tips (1.30pm Cheltenham)
The favourite for this race is currently Shiskin at odds of 3/1 with 888Sport. He’s generally 5/2 elsewhere but it’s one to oppose for Andrew: “he’s won two mickey mouse races, the form isn’t up to that much…the horses he’s beat aren’t brilliant.
There is a bit of a hype around this horse but if you’re not involved in the hype then it’s hard to support the favourite, especially at the current odds.
The second horse mentioned is Abacadabras who is currently second favourite at odds of 11/2 with William Hill. This horse has good form with Envoi Allen but Andrew questions his jumping and he “could make a mistake at a key time”. It is still unknown if he will handle the Cheltenham hill and might not find enough in the final couple of furlongs.
Andrew’s first selection he advises is Asterion Forlonge, who is the same owner as favourite Shiskin. Hopefully, he will run in the race despite being entered in the Ballymore as well. His two wins over hurdles this season have been stunning, including beating exciting prospect Easy Work my nine and a half lengths and a 10 length win at Naas. He stayed on well in that race against Easy Work and that indicates he’ll handle the hill. “I think 2 miles at the moment is where he wants to be. He jumps a little bit to his right which will be a little bit of a concern”.
The second selection is Fiddlerontheroof (8/1 with Coral) if he takes his chance in this race. He is also a Grade 1 winner and won a bumper for his former trainer before moving to Colin Tizzard’s yard. His last two wins at Sandown have been easy, by a total of 13 lengths. That is a flat track so the undulations of Cheltenham will be a question mark here but at odds of 8/1, he could be a lively each-way bet.
1.30pm Cheltenham Tips Day 1
Asterion Forlonge – 6/1
Fiddlerontheroof – 8/1
Arkle Chase Tips (2.10pm Cheltenham)
The second race on day 1 of the Cheltenham Festival is the Arkle Chase and Notebook is the current favourite at odds of 3/1 with William Hill. Andrew is confident that Notebook is ahead of Fakir Doudairies, confirming the form of their meeting over Christmas. We didn’t get the expected rematch at the Dublin Racing Festival. “I would Notebook ahead of Fakir Doudairies all day. I don’t see that form being reversed. I have a theory with Fakir Doudairies that when it comes to really good standard racing, he always has one or two too good”.
Notebook won at the Dublin Racing Festival but did get a bit worked up in the build-up, which is always a concern, especially on the big stage of Cheltenham. Andrew thinks Notebook can be beaten but it’s tough to find a horse who can beat him.
One that he does like the look of is Cash Back, who is currently odds of 7/1 with Betfair. “I don’t feel he should be the price he is”. He was beaten a half-length by Notebook last time out at the Dublin Racing Festival, he missed two out and was headed turning up, but battled back tenaciously”.
He’s been transformed over fences and there’s too much of a discretion in the prices between himself and Notebook.
At bigger odds, Brewinupastorm might be worth an each-way bet after a couple of slightly disappointing runs at Cheltenham and Aintree last season. He’s two from two over fences so far this season but even though that form isn’t good enough to win an Arkle, 10/1 might not be a bad price, especially if there are any positive noises from the stable.
2.10pm Cheltenham Tips Day 1
Cash Back – 7/1.
Brewinupastorm – 8/1.
Champion Hurdle Tips (3.30pm Cheltenham)
“The Champion Hurdle is a minefield of a race” is how Andrew starts his preview of this race. With Klassical Dream now out the race is wide open.
Epatante is the current favourite but she bombed at Cheltenham last year and Andrew thinks she’s too short in the betting. Pentland Hills is second-favourite for the race but he got chinned by Ballyandy at Haydock. Honeysuckle probably won’t run in this race.
Andrew likes the look of Supasundae for this race after putting up at 33/1 in an earlier ante-post preview video. He was fourth in the Irish Champion Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival a few weeks ago. He’s now 16/1 and a three-time Grade 1 winner.
Benie Des Dieux and Envoi Allen are both unlikely to run in the race but if they did, Andrew thinks they’d have a great chance in the race. With Bet365 offering non-runner no bet and best odds guaranteed, it might be worth having a punt on Benie Des Dieux just incase she gets re-routed to this. Envoi Allen is only 4/1 with the bookies who are non-runner no bet.
3.30pm Cheltenham Tips Day 1
Supasundae – 16/1.
Mare’s Hurdle Tips (4.10pm Cheltenham)
This race seems to be between Benie Des Dieux and Honeysuckle, if they both run in this race as expected. Both are also entered into the Champion Hurdle and would likely go close if running there. Andrew is hot on Benie Des Dieux at Evens saying “I just think Evens is class price, she’s a better horse and a strong traveller. She’s proved more and perhaps the best Mare Willie Mullins has ever trained.”
She hacked up in a race in France and should win whichever race she runs in at the 2020 Cheltenham Festival.
Andrew also has an each-way play in the race – Laurina. She hasn’t taken to fences and was pulled up last time out at Sandown. She clearly doesn’t like jumping fences but could run a big race back over hurdles. If she shows up in the race, she might have a chance at 14/1.
4.10pm Cheltenham Tips Day 1
Benie Des Dieux – 4/5.
Laurina – 14/1.
National Hunt Chase Tips (5.30pm Cheltenham)
The last race Andrew has previewed on in Cheltenham day 1 tips is the National Hunt Chase at 5.30pm. Carefully Selected is current favourite and although he likes the horse, Andrew is against him. he won last time out at Naas but make multiple mistakes. His selection, therefore, is Champagne Classic. “I think Champagne Classic is a brilliant option here – a good jumper, strong traveller and good form in the book”.
He won a Grade 1 Novice Hurdle at Punchestown beating the likes of Presenting Percy, Penhill and Al Boum Photo in that race.
Andrew’s bigger odds selection for the National Hunt Chase is Dominateur at 33/1. He might not turn up in the race but he finds generously for pressure and could thrive over this long Cheltenham 3m 6f trip. As it is unknown whether he’ll run or not, be sure to use the bet365 non-runner no bet offer so you’d get a refund if he doesn’t line up in the race.
5.30pm Cheltenham Tips Day 1
Champagne Classic – 9/2.
Dominateur – 33/1.
