The opening contest at Doncaster is the British Ebf Premier Fillies’ Handicap over 1m 3f 197y and for me, the two Sir Michael Stoute trained runners are the ones to watch here, Sorrel and my tip ALMAREEKA. The latter is going for a 4th win a row after winning previously at Yarmouth, Doncaster and Sailsbury. She has improved in each of her 4 runs this season and I feel there is still more to come from this 3-year-old with the brilliant Jim Crowley booked onboard. Sorrel is a promising type who broke her maiden off the same mark as today when winning at Leicester last month. There is more to come and I feel she can run well again but will find it hard to beat ALMAREEKA. Albafora has fairly useful form when winning on debut at Haydock back in June but hasn’t followed that up since but has run pretty well in defeat and she can improve again.
Next we have the bet365 Mallard Handicap over 1m 6f 115y and I am going for SLEEPING LION who is aiming to repeat last year’s success in this contest after landing it back 12 months ago. He is a consistent type and has been running well recently looking near his best. He placed recently in handicaps at Newcastle and Ascot. He is 3lb heavier this year but will need to be at his very best to land this and I feel he can give a good account here again with last year’s winning jockey Jamie Spencer back on board. Current market favourite for this race is Alfaatik who is a low mileage 4-year-old who is back after being gelded. He landed a win back on his return after 15 months off in a handicap at York last month. The step-up in trip should suit and give jockey Jim Crowley a chance for a quickfire double. Volcanic Sky is stepping back down in trip but is top weight here so he can be feared if he overcomes the penalty of being top weight for trainer Saeed bin Suroor and Jockey Cieren Fallon who recently had his 100th winner. Calculation was a winner over this C&D at Doncaster last season and was back on track when 2nd of 12 at Sandown over this distance recently so another big run could be expected. Hochfield has been finding form recently again after winning a handicap at Goodwood last month, but is against some progressive runners here so will need a big run here.
The 14.10 contest is the bet365 Handicap over 6f 111y has 11 runners and I am taking my chances with CHIEFOFCHIEFS (E/W) for trainer Charlie Fellowes and jockey William Buick. He has form in handicaps over 6 and 7 furlongs with a 4th of 19 last time out at Ascot back in July. He needs more of the same mark here but I feel he can be involved here with some bookies paying 4 places. Ghalyoon narrowly missed out on his return here over 7f last month when 2nd of 11 losing by a neck. So connections will be hoping the wind surgery has worked for him, he retains potential and can be involved. Musicality is a progressive type who made it 2 wins from 4 runs when landing a handicap at Newmarket 14 days ago with a strong finish. He can progress again and could be in the mix if stamina holds up. Sunset Breeze completed an impressive hat trick in the summer with wins at Newcastle, Newmarket, and finally at Chelmsford. He came back from 8 weeks off with a good 2nd of 11 in a handicap at Ascot 7 days ago. He remains on the same mark as last week and is an interesting contender. Edgewood is 2/3 this season for his new yard (Miss J A Camacho) who left the Paul Midgley yard. He is a C&D winner and can be in contention despite a 7lb rise. Tranchee made a winning start for his New Yard (David Loughnane) when winning at Wolverhampton back in July and has been a runner up on turf on his last two runs. They were on soft so connections will be hoping for the form to be continued on good to soft ground as expected here. The same goes with Danzan who goes of the same mark as last time (88) and trainer Tim Easterby will be hoping for his runner to end the duct of 3 runners up place in his last 3 races.
In the 4th race of the day, the group 2 Bombardier Flying Childers Stakes over 5f 3y, and I am taking my chance on MOHAWK KING who remains with potential with Frankie Dettori booked onboard. He steps down to 5f and should be suited by that. Sacred, who won on debut at Newmarket back in June and then ran well in the group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and followed that up again with a 2nd in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes. She steps back down to 5f and could put in a big run from stall 10. Steel Bull made it 2 from 2 when winning a group 3 at Goodwood over 5f back in July. He was 7th in the Phoenix Stakes (hit head in the stalls and broke two teeth) so that run can be excused. Frenetic is a speedy type who hasn’t been out of the top 2 in his 5 runs. He won a listed race at Curragh back in August and can’t be ruled out. Ventura Tormenta beat The Lir Jet in the Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly over 6f. He didn’t show up in The Phoenix Stakes at Curragh when last seen. Perotto is a progressive type who has a couple of wins to his name and will need to be at his best to land this.

Next up we have the group 2 Bet365 Doncaster Cup Stakes over 2m 1f 197y and the horse I like here is EAGLES BY DAY for trainer David O’ Meara and Jockey Daniel Tudhope who got his career back on track when making a winning start for David O’ Meara since leaving the Michael Bell Yard at York in a group 3 back in July. He fared well in the Goodwood Cup and the Lonsdale cup since. This is an easier task and he steps up in trip for that reason so he merits respect for me. Revolver has been red hot this season with 6 wins in Handicaps. He relished the longer trip last time out at Pontefract but is against harder opponents here so he will need to find a little more here. Spanish Mission is a smart operator who was better than ever when second in a Group 3 at Sandown over 2m and he improved on that run when winning a listed event at Chester when last seen on the 20th August, that was his first run for new yard Andrew Balding (left David Simcock). He should stay this distance and has claims. Selino should be suited to the step-up in trip for and this track should play to his strengths so he will be worth a check in the market. The Grand Visir is a smart Stayer who won the Ascot stakes at Ascot last summer and was narrowly beaten in the Queen Alexandra this season on return. He is another to check in the market. Red Verdon has won here before and a Group 2 at Longchamp and he comes here with respect.
In the second last race of the day, the listed bet365 Flying Scotsman Stakes over 7f 6y and I like ONE RULER for Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick. He was second to Etonian on his debut at Sandown in July over 7f. He followed that when going one better over the same C&D a month later. He can go well again and he has a bright future and should make his mark at this level. His main contender here is Spycatcher who was runner up in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York, he steps down in class and will be involved. At a bigger price, I will consider APOLLO ONE E/W to place with some bookies paying 4 places. He won on his debut at Newmarket on his debut last month and was good in the Solario Stakes. Laneqash fetched £175,000 as a yearling and looked a good prospect when winning a newcomers race at Ascot a month ago. New Mandate placed in a pair of races in his first two starts and won on his nursery debut at Sandown with a bit in a hand 19 days ago. He will still have more to come after only 3 runs.
The last day of the race on day 3 is the Gary Reid Memorial Maiden Stakes (plus 10) over 7f 6y and with a field of 10 runners with 7 of them making their debut here and I am going for MUAY THAI to improve again after a good debut 7 days ago when 3rd of 8 in a Novice over 6f. He wasn’t ideally placed but he has stall 1 here and can be respected here and involved. Tawaareq showed plenty of encouragement when 5th of 16 at Sandown over 7f on debut 19 days ago. Jim Crowley takes over from Dane O’Neill on board. Tromso is an interesting newcomer and will be worth a check in the market. John Leeper has some eye-catching pedigree being out of Frankel and Snow Fairy who is a 6-time group 1 winner. He makes plenty an appeal on paper but yard debutants tend to need to get a run under the belt first. He holds entries for the Derby and Royal Lodge. Crossword comes from Dawn Approach and the betting should help were to expect this debutant. The same goes for the John Gosden pair Cordouan and Taravara.
