The opener at Doncaster is a two runner Conditional Stakes race in which we see the return of the exciting LOGICIAN. Logician is going to prove very tough to beat here if she retains her ability after being on the sidelines since winning the St Leger at this course last year.
Zaaki would have been a decent opponent for Logician for his comeback run but I expect the favourite to get the job done here. Watch him win.
The 1.40 race from Doncaster is up next and that is a Fillies nursery handicap over 6f. It is a wide open betting heat with plenty of unexposed fillies lining up. Market movers will be something to keep an eye on here. Nazuna currently heads the top of the market after winning here by a neck last time out and I’m sure she will prove popular.
The horse I like here though is MEU AMOR. Meu Amor made her debut at Goodwood looking in need of the experience when fisnihing fourth at Goodwood. She then put that experience to good use when winning well at Pontefract on her second start and I think she will come on again for that here. She kept on well over 6f that day and I think this stiffer rest of 6f will suit her even more. Ralph Beckett is great at bringing his fillies along and Rossa Ryan is a jockey I rate pretty highly. At the prices I think she’s a cracking bet today.
The 2:10 contest is the May Hill Stakes, a Group 2 contest for the fillies over 1m. Zabeel Queen heads the market for the Roger Varian team. The Frankel filly was impressive on debut and is open to more improvement.
However, I prefer INDIGO GIRL here for the John Gosden team. We all know how good Gosden is with his fillies and I think he has a top notch one on his hands here. This Dubawi filly was impressive on debut winning easily by 3l up at Yarmouth. Daughters of Dubawi continue to progress as they go on normally and I expect this one to do the same. Dettori takes over from Havlin today which can only be a positive.
The 2:40 race is a 2-year-old Stakes race over 6f. Yazaman heads the market at 11/4 and he has shown strong form finishing behind some of the best 2-year-olds this term. He was very disappointing last time out though finishing a well-beaten sixth and I’m worried he’s ready for a break.
I much prefer the chances of LINE OF DEPARTURE (NB) here who is the complete opposite to Yazaman. He is improving with every run this year. He has won his last two starts well in nurseries at Yarmouth and Ascot since the blinkers were removed by trainer Roger Varian. I don’t think he has finished improving yet and I’m expecting him to make a bold bid today.
Next up is the feature on today’s card from Doncaster and that is the Group 2 Park Hill Fillies Stakes over 1m6f. Alpinista heads the market after finishing second to Love in the Yorkshire Oaks last time out and that’s the best piece of form on offer.
I like BELIEVE IN LOVE here though for that man Roger Varian again. Believe in Love continues to improve and has continued to defy the handicap winning her last four starts, all handicaps. This 3-year-old now steps into Group 2 company and I think she’ll be up to it. She knows how to win and she stays this trip very well which may not be the case for some of the market rivals.
The 3:45 race from Doncaster is a Class 2 handicap over 7f. It is a wide open contest like many of the handicaps at Doncaster this week and is provides a good betting opportunity.
The horse I like is EASTERN WORLD for Godolphin. The son of Dubawi was well fancied at York last time out but just faded late on to finish 5th. He didn’t settle very well that day and I think the stronger pace today will help him settle better. I think he is better than his current handicap mark and I think Eastern World has scope to improve when settling better. William Buick takes the ride.
Broughtons Gold is another who caught the eye this year and continues to defy a rise in the weights. Should go well at a nice e/w price for punters.
The finale on Day 2 of the St Leger festival is a Class 3 contest for sprinters over 6f.
I think FRESH (NAP) is easily the best of this lot. The son of Bated Breath won her handicap debut impressively last time out powering clear and I think Fresh can follow up with another victory here in this contest. He is totally unexposed having only ran 4 times in his career and that can’t be said for any of the opposition in my opinion. Fanshawe is a trainer that does well with his sprinters and I think he has another decent sprinter on his hands here.
