Glorious Goodwood Betting Tips for Day 1 – Tuesday 30th July
Following the epic clash between Enable and Crystal Ocean in the ‘King George’, attention now switches to the ‘Glorious’ Goodwood festival, with the attempt by Stradivarius to win an eighth successive race providing the highlight of the first day.
An opening handicap and two Group 2 events precede the Goodwood Cup with the main contenders in all four ITV televised races discussed below.
Unibet Handicap – 1.50 Goodwood
It will be difficult to ignore the claims of Setting Sail for this Class 2 1m2f handicap after he followed a decent win at Newmarket last month by chasing home Pivoine in a recent 21-runner contest at York. The 4-year-old gelding rarely runs a bad race and was a course winner back in September.
Among the challengers, Johnny Drama performed poorly last time at Royal Ascot but had previously scored twice in Ireland prior to that run, while Beringer only just failed at Sandown on his previous outing although he has yet to win in three previous starts on this track. Beringer was beaten a short head on that occasion by Jazeel and they meet on similar terms, but the latter was never involved in that race won by Pivoine.
Tip – Setting Sail to Win (7/2 with bet365).
Qatar Vintage Stakes – 2.25 Goodwood
Staged over 7f for 2-Year-olds, this Group 2 contest has attracted the impressive Chesham Stakes winner Pinatubo who is unbeaten in three races to date. He comfortably outpaced the Aidan O’Brien trained Lope Y Fernandez in that event and the runner-up will re-oppose on the same terms.
Positive from the Clive Cox stable may emerge as more of a threat after winning his only start by five lengths when claiming a Salisbury maiden last month. July Stakes placed horses Platinum Star and Visinari should also be involved at the finish while Mystery Power will carry a 3lb penalty for winning a recent Group 2 event at Newmarket.
Tip – Pinatubo to Win (6/4 with bet365).
Qatar Lennox Stakes – 3.00 Goodwood
For this Group 2 contest over 7f, Frankie Dettori has been booked to ride the James Tate trained Hey Gaman who finished a close second in a similar event at the Curragh just ten days previously. The 4-year-old colt had previously won at Longchamp and Leicester this term.
In an open-looking race, Space Traveller seemed to appreciate this distance when winning the Jersey Stakes at Ascot. He has been campaigned over 6f for most of his ten-race career to date.
Sir Michael Stoute will also be confident of a decent performance from Zaaki who was very narrowly beaten in a Group 2 contest at Ascot on his previous outing and who had won his two prior races this term. He seems much improved as a 4-year-old while similar-aged Pretty Baby is a course and distance winner from this meeting last season.
Tips – Hey Gaman to Win (7/2 with bet365).
Qatar Goodwood Cup – 3.35 Goodwood
Dual Ascot Gold Cup winner Stradivarius will attempt to claim this prize for the third successive time and he is unbeaten in seven previous contests. The versatile John Gosden trained horse had to wait for an opening at Ascot last month but soon asserted his superiority over several of his opponents in this race.
Second-placed Dee Ex Bee will again re-oppose but he seemed to be outpaced at the finish of the Gold Cup and there is no reason to suggest that he can reverse placings with Stradivarius.
Cross Counter may offer more of a threat than at Ascot where he finished fourth. He was traveling well for most of the 2m4f distance but just appeared to be out-stayed at the finish. A return to the two miles distance may benefit this Charlie Appleby gelding.
Tip – Stradivarius to win (8/1 with 888Sport).
