Glorious Goodwood Day 3 Betting Tips – Thursday 1st August 2019

Glorious Goodwood tips

The Nassau Stakes provides the highlight of Day 3 Of the Goodwood festival with Hermosa attempting to step upwards in distance following two Group 1 victories over one mile.

Proven stayer Mehdaayih is likely to be the main threat to her hopes. On the supporting card, two Group races precede the Nassau Stakes and another Unibet Handicap begins affairs for the afternoon. All four races are televised on ITV and the main contenders for each race are discussed below.

Unibet Handicap – 1.50 Goodwood

Although Forest Of Dean has won twice in lower grade company this season, the John Gosden colt could only finish fourth in a Class 2 handicap over this 1m2f distance at Newbury back in May. He has much to prove at this level unlike top-weight Walkinthesand who won a similar event at Newmarket during mid-July.

Dropping back to 1m2f could also benefit Sinjaari after an eighth-placed performance in the King George V Handicap at Ascot. He had previously been denied by a short head in a Newbury Class 2 handicap over that same distance.

Tip – Walkinthesand to Win (13/2 with Paddy Power)

Qatar Richmond Stakes – 2.25 Goodwood

After finishing fourth in a Newmarket 6f race on his debut last month, Royal Commando seemed to learn from that experience when comfortably winning a recent four runner event at Doncaster over the same distance. He could improve still further, but he now faces stronger opposition with Golden Horde finishing a respectable and close fifth in the Royal Ascot Coventry Stakes last time.

Threat performed even better that day at Ascot when second behind Arizona and he had finished first in a small-runner field at Newmarket prior to that race. Third in that encounter at Ascot was Guildsman who has since finished fourth in Newmarket’s July Stakes but once again, he might find one or two horses just too good form.

Tip – Threat to Win (13/8 with Paddy Power)

Gordon Stakes – 3.00 Goodwood

Staged over 1m4f for three-year-olds, this Group 3 contest has attracted Spanish Mission who comfortably won a similar graded event at Newmarket last time. He had only just failed to beat the useful Private Secretary on this track in his only other racecourse appearance this season.

The David Simcock trained colt will be opposed by the unbeaten Leo De Fury among others, with Jessica Harrington hoping that he can reproduce the form displayed in Ireland where both wins have been secured by five lengths.

Dal Horrisgle should also be a contender after winning both races this term but he needs to improve still further from an effort at Haydock where he beat Southern Rock by three lengths in a Class 3 handicap, while Constantinople was only just beaten by stable-mate South Pacific in Ascot’s King George V Handicap.

Tips – Spanish Mission to Win (5/1 with Paddy Power)

Qatar Nassau Stakes – 3.35 Goodwood

For this 1m2f Group 1 event for fillies and mares, there will be some hope in the Aidan O’Brien stable that Hermosa can return to winning ways after she could only finish second in the Coronation Stakes. She had previously claimed both the Newmarket and Irish 1,000 Guineas but this extra distance is unknown territory for the filly.

Cheshire Oaks heroine Mehdaayih will provide a decent challenge to Hermosa especially as she has proven form over middle distances despite her disappointing effort in the Epsom Oaks.

French raider Channel could also be involved after winning the Group 1 Prix De Diane Longines last time but she only just denied several faster finishing horses at the finish.

Tip – Mehdaayih to win (5/2 with Paddy Power)
