Unibet Summer Handicap – 2.25 Goodwood
Laafy is the expected favourite for this 1m6f Class 2 handicap after comfortably winning at similar grade race at Newbury during early June and then following up by finishing a close second in Haydock’s Old Newton Cup. He is also a previous winner over this distance last season at Nottingham in heavy ground.
Among his opponents will be Platitude who has not won since May 2018 but has been a fairly consistent performer this season over this distance. He is gradually being reduced in the weights and was second last time at Sandown. However, he has much to find with Calling The Wild based on an Ascot race during early July.
The Richard Hughes trained horse won that Class 3 contest on the Berkshire course after racing creditably in a seasonal opener at Chelmsford. Yet, he must still prove his ability at this level.
Meanwhile, Themaxwecan is a course winner from last term but tends to be unreliable while last season’s winner and top-weight King’s Advice has not won in nine subsequent attempts.
Tip – Laafy to win
Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes – 3.00 Goodwood
A small field may have been declared for this Group 2 1m6f contest, but all four runners can boast decent credentials. Last season’s easy winner Enbihaar is the likely favourite and opened her season by finishing fourth at Newmarket over the shorter twelve furlongs. She will improve for that effort and was a triple Group 2 winner during 2019.
Manuela De Vega will be a formidable opponent to Enbihaar after winning her only two races this season. Both wins were earned at Haydock over 12f and while she may have improved since failing to score last term, she was a distant second to the expected favourite in this race last August and third in another Goodwood event.
The two other fillies to consider are Snow and Cabaletta with the former winning two of her four races this term. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, she recently finished fifth in the Irish Oaks but may be more suited by this longer distance while Roger Varian’s Cabaletta was well beaten by Manuela De Vega in the Lancashire Oaks. She won a recent Listed event but is suspect at this level.
Tip – Enbihaar to win
Unibet Stewards’ Cup – 3.35 Goodwood
High numbered drawn horses have often been successful in this Class 2 6f handicap but luck when running in a large field is also important. Nahaarr (draw 19) experienced a sizeable field when finishing third in Ascot’s Silver Wokingham Handicap and he followed that performance by a comfortable winning display at Newbury.
Featuring among his many opponents will be Meraas (4) who has won at Hamilton and Pontefract this season but was well beaten when sent down to Newmarket by Mark Johnston.
Summerghang (17) is another Pontefract winner this term and competent at this level while not being disgraced when sixth in a recent Group 3 event at Newbury. Stable companion and Wokingham fourth Gulliver (3) is a fairly consistent horse who won the York Coral Sprint Cup last October. He was just beaten at the Curragh last time.
Wokingham winner Hey Jonesy (15) should not be ignored although he just held the fast-finishing Summerghang in that race and had performed with much mediocrity in previous contests.
Tip – Summerghang to win
Qatar Handicap – 4.10 Goodwood
Staged over 7f, this Class 2 handicap has attracted nine declared runners with Cold Front set to be a prominent challenger. He lost his maiden tag last time when easily winning a minor Haydock event but now needs to prove that he can handle this step upwards in grade.
Opposing Cold Front will be Society Lion from the Sir Michael Stoute yard. She was a close second at Haydock last time and has won once in four starts, but there is a suggestion that softer ground will be her preference.
Firmer conditions seem to suit Mister Snowdon who finished a remote eleventh in the Jersey Stakes. A subsequent second place in a York handicap was a far better effort and he may be more suited by this extra furlong.
King Ragnar was a narrow winner on fast ground at Leicester last time but this race is much tougher although he finished third in a Newmarket Class 2 handicap earlier this season when running over 6f.
Tip -Mister Snowdon to win
