The opener is a Class 3 handicap for the 3-year-olds and the exciting War Front colt AL QAQAA 2/1 heads the market for the in-form Haggas team. He was impressive last time out travelling strongly before pulling clear. He holds Moomba on that form and he is a worthy favourite all things considered with more improvement looking likely.
However, I am happy to also chance CELESTRAN 10/1 EW here for the duo of Dettori and Gosden. Celestran hasn’t went on as expected and although he’s finished third and second on his last two runs they were small field races where he was beaten well. Dettori takes the reigns now and he excels where this type of horse, the type that needs relaxed and times to perfection. He returns to very fast ground which seen him win very well first time out this season at Yarmouth and he couldn’t be in better hands to get the improvement back on track.
The next is a Group 3 contest over 7f for the fillies and mares and One Master heads the market at 13/8. She is back over her favourite trip and will be a popular favourite.
I prefer the chances of BREATHTAKING LOOK 6/1 here for the Stuart Williams team. Williams is very good with his sprinters and she is one of his best at the moment. She ran July Cup winner Oxted close at the start of the season at Newmarket which is strong form. Last time out she was nabbed close home after storming clear at the furlong pole. This ground will be perfect for her and the step back up to 7f will be a positive.
Group 3 action again at 14:15 and it’s an interesting contest over the 1m distance. Khaloosy is the banker of the week for many here at 4/6 after running out an impressive winner at Royal Ascot. That was in a handicap and he steps into group 3 company here.
I’m happy to play MY OBERON 4/1 here for the Haggas team. I was really impressive with how he powered clear last time out coming on bundles for his first career start. He was strong in the market that day which suggests connections were expecting the improvement. Haggas and Marquand have been on fire here at Goodwood this week and at the prices I’m happy to take the favourite on with My Oberon here.
The Golden Mile handicap is next up and this heats renewal appears wide open with it being 4/1 the field. Prompting is the favourite and he is highly progressive and sneaks in at the bottom of the weights here.
I am happy to chance VALE OF KENT 9/1 EW here for the Mark Johnston team. He was a good second in this race last year and I feel connections have been targeting him to try and go one better this time round. Vale Of Kent is a classy but inconsistent performer but we all know how much Johnston likes to have his peaked for the Glorious meeting. He is a precious course and distance winner and won’t mind this ground. At the price he has to be worth backing to be on a going day here.
The feature race of the day is the King George Qatar Stakes for the 5f sprinters and the superstar Battaash is 1/3 to follow up his win at Royal Ascot.
1/3 is probably a fair price in many people’s eyes but he can throw in the odd stinker so an e/w play has to be worth a go here I feel.
I fancy LIBERTY BEACH 7/1 EW here. They can’t go quick enough for her and this is the ultimate speed test, 5f round Goodwood. She has won over course and distance and the ground won’t be an issue. She was the second-best horse behind Battaash at Ascot despite finishing third and travelled all over them at Sandown before A’ali came late to pounce. A’ali has since won again in Ireland and I think Liberty Beach will get close to Battaash here. She has to be worth an e/w play at the 7/1 available.
Back to the Group 3 action and this time it is the L’Ormarins Queens Plate Glorious Stakes. Communique heads the market for the Johnston team after a fine run last time out.
Behind him that day was DESERT ENCOUNTER 5/2 and he is my selection here. Desert Encounter won this race last year and last time out when behind the favourite he was eye-catching which the next start in mind. He finished third that day and I’m hoping that last run has set him up perfectly for a repeat bid here. Crowley takes the reigns which is a positive.
The 16:20 race is a 6f contest for the 2-year-olds. Zamaani heads the market at 2/1 but has to give lumps on weight away to the rest of the field here. He appears a classy sort and may well be able to give the weight but not worth a bet at the prices for me.
I prefer the chance of PEROTTO 5/1 NAP for the Marcus Tregoning team. It has already been some week for Marcus and hopefully he can add to that here. He ran a fare race first time out before improving to win on his second career start. That was over this course and distance which I think is a huge positive as it can be a tricky course for the 2-year-olds so the fact he’s proved himself round here is key. The second that day has already won since and hopefully he can follow in the same footsteps and win here.
The finale of the day is a maiden fillies Stakes over 6f.
The horse I like is VENTURA DIAMOND 10/3 NB Fahey’s horses have been running well of late and he teamed up to win the finale on Wednesday with Oisin Murphy and hopefully he can do the same here. Ventura Diamond was staying on well on his debut finishing 4th. That was over 5f and this step up to 6f will certainly be a positive.
