The 1:40 race from Ayr is a Group 3 race over 5f. Equilateral heads the market at 2/1 for Charlie Hills but I believe he may be worth taken on at that price.
The horse I like is LAZULI. Lazuli has been a little hot and cold this season but his win three starts back at Sandown was very impressive in my opinion. A return to that form would see him go very close here. He’s had a nice little break since his last start and I feel he needed it after a few runs in quick succession. Bold bid expected with Buick up.
The opener from Ayr on ITV today is the Doonside Cup Stakes, a listed contest over 1m2f. Addeybb is favourite here after a fine campaign over the last year or so. He has to give weight away to the rest of the field and will be hoping for some rain.
The horse I like is FOX CHAIRMAN NB. He was unlucky not to win last time out and I think De Sousa just got going on him too late. He’s improving with every run this year and I think he deserves to win a good race like this one. Ground conditions look ideal today and champion jockey Oisin Murphy takes the ride.
The 2:15 contest is a Class 2 handicap over the 1m2f distance. Ilaraab will prove popular for the Haggas team as he seeks a four-timer.
The one I like here is TENBURY WELLS. I felt he was unlucky to not complete the hat-trick last time out at Sandown as he was just pipped on the line. He is only up 3lb for that and I think he is still improving. I’m happy to see William Buick aboard and I think he will take a lot of beating here today for the John Gosden team.
The 2:30 from Ayr is the forever competitive Ayr Silver Cup over 6f. As wide open as ever the unexposed Kings Lynn heads the market at 7/2 and could be anything. I’m worried he could be drawn on the wrong side here however.
The horse I like is the top weight GOLDEN APOLLO EW. Golden Apollo has strong form over this course and distance including winning this contest last year. He has been running well throughout the year but I believe this would have always been his main target. Easterby is a man to follow at this time of year and from a nice high draw he is a great e/w at double figured prices.
The 2:50 race is the Legacy Cup Stakes, a Group 3 race over 1m3f. Only four runners go to post for this one and I’m sure connections will believe each of their horses are all capable of winning.
I’m happy to give DESERT ENCOUNTER another chance here. He won this race in 2017 and 2019 and I feel this 2020 renewal will be run to suit. I think Elarqam will set a fair pace out in front and with only 3 rivals I expect Desert Encounter to avoid any troubled passages and is the value play for me in this contest.
The 3:05 race is a 6f sprint, a group 3 contest for the fillies. It is wide open and I’d advise punters to keep an eye out for any market movers.
I like UMM KULTHUM who easily has the strongest form in this field. She done well to win on debut and she was heavily punted that day which suggests connections were expecting a victory. She was third on his next start in the Lowther Stakes which looks a strong piece of form and a repeat of that effort would make her tough to beat here.
The 3:25 race is the feature from Newbury today and it’s the Mill Reef Stakes. This is a 6f Group 2 contest for the 2-year-olds. Five thousandtoone was impressive last time out on the AW and if he can translate that run to turf he will be bang there at the finish.
The horse I like is RHYTHM MASTER NAP for the Richard Fahey team. This horse was impressive when winning on debut before running a big race at Deauville last time out finishing third to top 2-year-old Campanelle. That is easily the strongest piece of form in this field and I think he should be favourite.
The final race is the big one, the Ayr Gold Cup. Forever competitive with the favourite Mr Lupton opening up at 7/1. He won well at the Curragh last Sunday but was on the right side of the draw and I don’t fancy him to follow up here.
I like WISE COUNSEL EW in this one. I backed him last time out but looking back on that run, it appeared like a run to blow away the cobwebs on his first run back looking ahead to this race. He won well at this meeting in 2019 over 7f and I can see him staying on strongly over this strongly run 6f. A nice high draw too which I believe will be crucial.
