Newbury racing tips

Three decent races at Newbury and the Great St Wilfred Handicap at Ripon provide the highlights of this Saturday afternoon’s racing, with the main contenders for each race and our Saturday racing tips discussed below.

Both the Geoffrey Freer and Hungerford Stakes are Group events while the Denford Stakes for two-year-olds has been renamed from the popular Washington Singer Stakes. All four races will be featured on ITV racing.

Denford Stakes – 1.50pm Newbury

In preparation for this 7f Listed race for 2-year-olds, Thunderous has won two minor events on Northern courses without being asked a serious question. However, he is likely to face stronger opposition in this contest with Juan Elcano a probable contender.

This son of Frankel won his opening race before narrowly failing to beat Mystery Power in a Group 2 event at Newmarket. However, the first and third horses that day have subsequently flopped in subsequent outings.

Other contenders include Sun Power and Pyledriver. The former horse has not been disgraced in Listed company at Ascot in his last two races while the William Muir trained Pyledriver won his only start at Salisbury when producing a more workmanlike performance.

Tip – Thunderous to Win @ 5/1 with Betfair (bet £20 > win £120 or get a £20 cash refund if it doesn’t win)

Unibet Geoffrey Freer Stakes – 2.25pm Newbury

Prior to contesting this extended 1m5f Group 3 event, Morando has contested three high-quality races without winning. However, he had previously won twice at this standard more especially when comfortably beating a below-par Kew Gardens in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester.

Among the small field in opposition, Sextant has won three of his four races this term but has yet to race in a graded contest. The Sir Michael Stoute gelding has competed only in handicaps this term while Durston just failed in a Goodwood handicap last month after winning two races at Class 2 level.

Tip – Morando to win @ 11/10 with Betfair (bet £20 > win £42 or get a £20 CASH refund if it loses)

William Hill Great St Wilfred Handicap – 3.15 Ripon

As per the Stewards Cup at Goodwood, this Class 2 6f handicap is not easy to predict, but Poyle Vinnie won the consolation race on that Southern track and enters this contest on the second bottom weight.

Dakota Gold will be another threat after winning a similar event at York last time. However, he is an inconsistent horse who has won just twice in seventeen previous starts while Summerghand has lost all five races this term but has not been beaten by more than four lengths on any occasion.

The weight may just inconvenience David O’Meara’s gelding whereas Citron Major is well-treated for winning last time but needs to improve further to win at this level.

Tip – Poyle Vinnie each-way @ 14/1 with Betfair (bet £20 > win £300 or get a £20 CASH refund if it loses)

Unibet Hungerford Stakes – 3.35 Newbury

There is much to like about Safe Voyage as he bids to win this Group 2 7f contest with the John Quinn trained horse improving throughout the season. After winning a Haydock handicap on his seasonal debut, he twice won subsequently at the course at Listed and Group 3 level before finishing third in a decent race at the Curragh. He might appreciate this easier track.

Hey Gaman finished just ahead of Safe Voyage that day in Ireland and was also a narrow second in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at Goodwood behind Sir Dancealot, who is a capable performer at this level. Trained by David Elsworth, the 5-year-old gelding is bidding to repeat his victory in this race from last season.

Flaming Spear finished less than three lengths behind Sir Dancealot at Goodwood on his seasonal debut and could improve for that outing.

Tip – Safe Voyage to Win @ 2/1 with Betfair (bet £20 > win £60 or get a £20 cash refund if it loses)
