Irish 2000 Guineas 2019 Betting Tips, Race Preview and Odds

Too Darn Hot 2000 Guineas

The Aidan O’Brien trained Magna Grecia will be attempting a Guineas double at the Curragh following his victory at Newmarket earlier this month.

Third placed horse Skardu is expected to re-opposed alongside Too Darn Hot and other worthwhile opposition with the chances of all Irish 2000 Guineas declared horses analysed below.

Irish 2000 Guineas – the main contenders

There are 14 declared runners for the 2019 Irish Guineas at the Curragh and we’re in for a clash of Too Darn Hot vs Magna Grecia over in Ireland. But who else are the main contenders for Irish 2000 Guineas glory?

Magna Grecia 11/1

Too Darn Hot – 11/8

Unbeaten as a 2-year-old, a slight injury enforced the absence of Too Darn Hot from the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas. When finally appearing in the Dante Stakes at York, stamina issues were blamed for his second placing over 1m2f, although he may have also needed the race following an interrupted preparation. The John Gosden trained colt may not be the biggest of horses but he may improve for that outing and will be a danger over the one-mile trip.

Magna Grecia – 6/4

Although Ten Sovereigns was the favourite from the O’Brien stable, Magna Grecia claimed the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket when he raced with two other horses on the seemingly favoured stand side of the course. That success followed his narrow triumph in the Vertem Futurity Stakes at Doncaster in his final racecourse appearance last season. He is clearly a talented colt but is not unbeatable as proved when beaten by French raider Persian King at Newmarket prior to the Doncaster victory.

Skardu – 7/1

This William Haggas trained horse won the Craven Stakes at Newmarket prior to his third-placed finish in the Guineas, and he was arguably finishing best of all the runners in that race from the unfavoured centre of the track. However, that effort was rather workmanlike from Skardu and there are no reasons to suggest that he can reverse placings with his Irish rival even in a smaller field, so he’s not one to consider against the big two in the field for the Irish 2000 Guineas this weekend.

Shelir – 18/1

This unbeaten colt from the Dermot Weld stable did not race as a 2-year-old but has won both starts this term, and his latest victory at the Curragh in a Listed race over 7f suggested that he would be a better horse over this slightly longer distance. Shelir did win at Navan over a mile on his debut, but he does seem to take some time in reaching top gear and may just lack the class of his rivals.

Decrypt – 14/1

Trained by Paddy Twomey in Ireland, Decrypt has won the latest two of his three starts and his victory over 7f at Cork last month was particularly impressive. Group 1 company represents a significant step upwards in class for this grey colt but there is no denying that he is worthy of the opportunity, and he could improve for that Cork win having not raced since June 2018 when he won on this course.

Phoenix Of Spain – 12/1

Charlie Hills sends over this colt who was narrowly beaten by Magna Grecia at Doncaster last season but has not been seen on a racecourse since that loss. Prior to that contest, he was defeated only by Too Darn Hot in the Champagne Stakes and was nearly three lengths clear of the remainder. A lack of race fitness may be a disadvantage but he is a decent horse who won the Acomb Stakes at York last term.
