We welcome back Cheltenham today and the first selection of the day comes up in the Class 2 Ballymore Novice Hurdle ran over 2m 5f. This looks like a trappy affair with a few promising types featuring who we may not have got to the bottom of yet. I’m siding against Ask For Glory who is the short-priced favourite and taking a chance on the Kim Bailey trained Does He Know (11/2).
The selection looks open to progress after an eye-catching performance last time out at Ludlow and has form with good in the ground description. With a run under his belt this season we can be confident the selection will not need the run and will put up bold showing over a trip that will suit.
The Matchbook Better Way To Bet Novices Chase is a class 2 event ran over 3m. Doctor Duffy comes in here after an excellent summer campaign in Ireland which included two victories and an excellent effort in the Kerry National therefore, it would not surprise me if the Charles Byrnes charge came close here today.
However, the horse I am going for here is Galvin (9/4) who has also enjoyed a fruitful summer notching up an impressive three timer. The son of gold well has course form after running a cracker in the Northern Trust at last seasons festival only finding impressive Imperial Aura to good. Galvin will have conditions to suit today and providing he handles the step up in trip I think we can expect the favourite to go in here.
The flat season isn’t over yet as we head to Doncaster for the Class 2 Vertem Investing In The Future Handicap which is ran over 6f. This is a competitive contest and the selection here comes in the shape of the consistent Tranchee (9/2) who put in an eye catching performance in the Sprint Trophy at York last time out only finishing behind the handicap stalwart Guliver. The David Loughnane trained four year old has been put up 2lbs for his previous run and I feel the handicapper has been lenient here. With ground conditions to suit and with the selection knocking on the door recently we can expect to be in the mix at the business end of the race here.
The squareintheair.com Handicap Hurdle is class 3 event contested over 2m 5f which looks to be the most wide-open race on the card today. I am going to give two selections here from opposite ends of the handicap.
For the first play we are heading towards the bottom of the weights and taking a punt on Debestyman E/W (25/1 NAP) who was travelling along nicely last time out until fading three out. I got the impression the Sue Smith trained charge needed the run and will come for its outing at Uttoxeter. The selection has shown promise in the past when travelling like the winner in the Lanzarote Hurdle until coming to grief at the final fence. If we get a similar run here we can be hopeful of at least grabbing a place provided the selections jumping holds up.
My second selection here is the rank outsider of the field Golan Fortune E/W (33/1) who didn’t disgrace himself in the Coral Cup back in March at the festival by staying on well up the famous hill running through traffic against some well-handicapped sorts. We are carrying top weight here but with Mr Lee taking off a generous 7lbs we can hopeful of running into a place.
The next race is the Vertem.co.uk Handicap which is a class 2 event ran over 1m 6f. The selection here is Opera Gift (7/2) who looks like it will relish today’s stamina test. The Andrew Balding charge has an advantage at the weights today over the short-priced favourite Ocean Wind and I believe this could prove crucial here. The son of Nathanial has come on for each run and I expect to see another step forward here.
The final selection comes up in the Bentley Spur Handicap Chase which is a class 2 event contested over 1m 7f. This is a wide-open betting market and again looks like another competitive race. The selection here is Rouge Vif (9/2 NB) who stayed on well up the famous Cheltenham hill in the Arkle back in March and I think that’s the best form line to follow here. The Harry Whittington charge should have no problem handling the good ground and I expect a bold showing from the classiest horse in the race.
If we get a deluge of rain before racing begins tomorrow and the ground turns up heavy the Dr Newland trained Katpoli 12/1 E/W is also worth a mention who’s best form has come on heavy ground and will thereabouts coming up the hill if we get more rain.
