888Sport racing tips offer

William Hill Premier Novices’ Hurdle – 2.45 Kelso

Paul Nicholls is sending Calva D’Auge all the way up to the Scottish borders for this 2m2f Grade 2 hurdle race and the 5-year-old gelding has raced three times already this year winning twice. His three victory margins this season have all been by less than three lengths but he may appreciate this extra two furlongs.

There will be Northern opposition with Ruth Jefferson expected to saddle Clondaw Caitlin and the 5-year-old mare comfortably won her only two starts over hurdles. This race will be a more significant challenge while Cheddleton is another contender.

A winner of his last two contests over the smaller obstacles, his last victory was earned at this course last month on heavy ground over two miles.

Racing Tip – Cheddleton to Win (9/2).

888Sport Mares Novices’ Hurdle – 3.00 Doncaster

Cill Anna is expected to start a clear favourite for this 3m Listed mares hurdle race and she has gradually improved throughout the season culminating in a comfortable seven lengths victory at Wincanton last month over 2m5f. This race will be a tougher contest for the Paul Nicholls trained mare.

Other horses to consider in this event include Eleanor Bob from the Venetia Williams stable and who was an easy winner over 2m2f last time at Exeter. Despite not competing at the three miles distance to date, she seems to have thrived since racing over further than 2m.

It would also be unwise to ignore Northern contender Aurora Thunder who has finished second in her three previous races but who might appreciate running over this extra trip.

Tip – Eleanor Bob to win (4/1).

William Hill Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase – 3.15 Newbury

A competitive field has been declared for this 2m4f Grade 3 contest and the Paul Nicholls/Bryony Frost combination will hope for a decent performance from Mont Des Avaloirs. Although the 7-year-old gelding has not won a race in nine outings, he was seven lengths behind Champ at level weights earlier this season and finished second last time. There is just a suggestion he may be slightly one-paced.

Opposition will be provided by two other Nicholl’s runners although Secret Investor and San Benedeto are both set to carry large weights. Both horses have also yet to win this season unlike Enrichissant who is just 1lb out of the handicap with 10st.

This contest will be a real step upwards in class for the 6-year-old but he was a very easy winner at Huntingdon in his previous outing just nine days previously, and his chances should not be dismissed.

Two other horses to consider are Clondaw Castle and Bennys King. The former gelding won earlier this month at Warwick when seemingly favouring the 2m4f distance. He also finished fourth in last season’s Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham while also narrowly beaten by Diego Du Charmil earlier this season over the same two miles trip.

As for Bennys King, winning at Newbury back in November was a decent performance and he was unlucky last time when beaten by a neck last month in a valuable handicap at Ascot.

Tip – Clondaw Castle to Win (7/1).

888Sport Grimethorpe Handicap Chase – 3.35 Doncaster

Definitly Red is set to carry 12st7lb in this 3m2f contest but there is just a suspicion that this contest may be a prep race for his main target of the Grand National. This distance may just be too short for the 11-year-old gelding.

Of more interest could be Worthy Farm. Trained by Paul Nicholls, he has narrowly won his last two handicap chases which were both claimed at Wincanton. He has improved with racing throughout this season.

Another horse to consider among the lower weights is Fortified Bay who outstayed his rivals when winning at Newcastle last month. He has won two successive races and gives the impression of being a tenacious horse over longer distances.

Boldmere is also likely to be a serious challenger and should have completed a three-timer but for falling at the last fence at Wetherby last time when leading. His two previous victories were earned by more than ten lengths apiece and he should be prominent if his confidence has not been adversely affected.

Tip – Boldmere to Win (5/1)
