Each-way Lucky 15 Betting Tips and Previews for Day 1 at York (19/08/20)

York races betting tips

The first day of the York Ebor Festival gives us the first chance to pick out a lucky 15 tip and John has four selections on Wednesday’s card.

After beating Enable in his previous start, Ghaiyyath now tackles the Juddmonte International on the first day of the York August Festival.

He faces strong opposition in a decent renewal and that feature contest of the day is previewed alongside both the Great Voltigeur and Acomb Stakes. A near six-furlong handicap opens the meeting and all four races will be televised on ITV.

The four selections make up a 7000/1 accumulator for York this week – we’d recommend an each-way lucky 15 bet!

Sky Bet And Symphony Group Handicap – 1.45 York

22 horses have been declared for the opening race of the York Ebor meeting staged over an extended five furlongs and it should be a competitive affair. It is expected that Jawwaal will start favourite after winning both starts this season and while he has improved significantly this season, his rating has also increased substantially.

Jonah Jones will be 9lb better weighed than Jawaal for a three lengths defeat at Ascot but he has since disappointed at York over 6f when he may have also faced unsuitable fast ground.

9lb is also the weight turnaround for Aplomb who finished fourth in that race at the Berkshire track. There is just the suggestion that he will be more favoured by this slightly longer distance and he is returning to a lower racing mark. He was beaten just a neck at Ascot last term in a Class 2 handicap over 6f.

All three horses will face likely competition from Jabbarockie who has been beaten by no more than three lengths in any of his last three contests and who won at Newmarket on his seasonal reappearance off just a slightly lower mark. However, he has yet to win at this Class 2 level.

Take note also of Lahore who is Class 2 course winner this term while Copper Knight was a course winner last season of this same mark and is seeking a five-timer on the Knavesmire. He raced in the Nunthorpe at this meeting last year.

Tattersalls Acomb Stakes – 2.15 York

Four horses are unbeaten in their only race ahead of participating in this 7f Group 3 contest for 2-year-olds. Cloudbridge produced a decent performance when scoring by more than three lengths at Leicester and the third-placed horse won on his next start.

Of the other three horses yet to lose, Gear Up is a course and distance winner despite a troubled time immediately before the race while Royal Scimitar should appreciate this extra furlong after winning by a neck at Newbury. Praise Of Shadows was a comfortable winner at Chester but was far more impressive than the three lengths winning margin suggests.

Among the other contenders is Titan Rock who was a recent winner at Goodwood over this trip, and there are hopes that Darvel can repeat his recent victory at Ayr but he tackles 7f for the first time in three outings.

Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes – 2.45 York

An interesting challenger for this 1m4f Group 2 race will be the John Gosden trained horse Darain who is unbeaten in his only two starts. Bypassing the racecourse as a 2-year-old, he won his debut race at Newbury before scoring at Newmarket. He was a clear winner in both contests but this race is a much more demanding test.

King Edward VII winner Pyledriver will represent decent opposition and his poor performance in the Epsom Derby can probably be excused as he never seemed to be travelling on the course gradients. The flat track of York should suit.

Another horse to run slightly below par in the Derby was Mogul but he returned to form by winning the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood. He was beaten by Pyledriver at Ascot and can be a difficult colt to assess, but he should be able to confirm Goodwood form with runner-up Highland Chief.

Racing at this level will be major step upwards for the twice-raced Roberto Escobarr who won by four lengths on this course last month. Yet, he offered much promise on his racecourse debut and could be a better horse over this slightly longer trip, whereas Berkshire Rocco is consistent but may just lack that necessary finishing burst.

Juddmonte International Stakes – 3.15 York

Having won all three of his races this year, Ghaiyyath will be a leading contender for this extended 1m2f Group 1 contest and beating Enable in the Eclipse is arguably the strongest form in this event. The second-placed mare may not have been at peak fitness but the 5-year-old front runner was a fairly comfortable winner that day. He may not want the ground to soften too much.

Two years his junior, 2,000 Guineas winner Kameko is expected to provide a decent challenge after failing to stay the 1m4f Epsom Derby distance when fourth. He was then hampered in the 1m Sussex Stakes when again fourth but may be more suited to this distance and a flatter track.

There will also be the challenge of Lord North who has improved from handicap company last term to win the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes last time. An improving gelding, he cannot be ignored while Aspetar was a course and distance winner on his previous start but this race is much tougher.

Two Group 1 victories over ten furlongs at the Curragh this season ensures that Magical is also likely to be competitive in this contest and her Champions Stakes win back in October proves she is very capable at this distance.
