Sky Bet and Symphony Strensall Stakes – 1.50 York
Lord Glitters is fancied in the markets to claim this 1m1f Group 3 contest, and he reverts to this grade after racing twice without success in Group 2 company this term. However, he did win Ascot’s Queen Anne Stakes last season so he cannot be ignored.
Dark Vision will represent a decent challenge after winning twice and finishing second in his four races this term. Although three of those contests were in handicaps, he was the narrow winner of Listed event at Pontefract beating four others.
French Group 1 winner Zabeel Prince could also be involved but he has failed to win in four subsequent outings although his fifth place in a Group 3 race at Leopardstown last month was more promising than the bare form suggests.
Other contenders include Pogo who finished less than four lengths behind the useful Persian King at Chantilly last time whereas Miss O’Connor bids for a return to winning ways after finishing fifth in her only start this term. She probably needs soft underfoot conditions.
Tip: Zabeel Prince to Win
Sky Bet City Of York Stakes – 3.00 York
Having won his only race this season when scoring over 7f at Newmarket, Limato now tries to win this Group 2 affair over the same distance. He is a previous winner at this level and while he is a now a veteran performer at 8-years-old, there are several other seasoned campaigners declared.
6-year-old One Master could start favourite and seems happier performing at this distance. She narrowly won the Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood last time and is a twice Group 1 winner at the October Longchamp meeting.
Safe Voyage is another experienced horse who won the Epsom Surrey Stakes earlier this season but he has yet to win at this level and was beaten by Glorious Journey in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes last term. However, the latter horse has failed to sparkle this term after racing in the Middle East over the Winter.
Expect challenges also from Lancaster House, who won a Group 3 event at the Curragh before finishing second when slightly upgraded last month, and San Donato who has raced in decent company over one mile but may appreciate this shorter trip.
Tip: One Master to Win
Sky Bet Ebor Handicap – 3.40 York
After a promising campaign last term, Fujaira Prince was an easy winner of his only race this season when clinching an Ascot handicap over this distance. However, the grey gelding has risen significantly in the ratings and faces a much tougher assignment.
Trueshan will be a particularly difficult opponent after winning five of seven races since August last year. Following a narrow win at Haydock last month, he could be better equipped to tackle this 1m6f distance rather than twelve furlongs.
A Group 3 win in Goodwood’s Glorious Stakes suggests that Pablo Escobarr will be a likely contender and while he has yet to race beyond 12f, his breeding suggests he should stay this trip.
Others to consider include True Self from the Willie Mullins Irish yard and who has raced in Group company in both contests this term. He won a Listed event over this distance at Gowran Park last season and is fairly weighted.
Joseph O’Brien also sends over Pondus who was a close fourth in a Group 3 race at Leopardstown last time but may just prefer soft going whereas Ghostwatch is a course and distance winner from 2018 and has gradually improved this season after missing 2019.
Tips: Trueshan to Win & Ghostwatch EW
Julia Graves Roses Stakes – 4.10 York
Staged over 5f for 2-year-olds, this Listed race has attracted Politics from the Andrew Balding yard and he won a maiden at the second time of asking when comfortably claiming a Sandown event.
He will be opposed by Ben Macdui who won on his racecourse debut at Hamilton before a decent showing in Goodwood’s Molecomb Stakes when second behind the useful Steel Bull. Dropping to this grade is a positive sign.
Among others to consider is Acklam Express who won a Nursery at Goodwood last time while Blackberry is unbeaten in his only two starts but seems to idle when in front and so there may be more to come.
Tip: Ben Macdui to win
