Lucky 15 Tips for the ITV Racing from Newbury and Ayr
The William Hill Ayr Gold Cup provides the handicap highlight of this weekend with the usual vast number of runners declared and there is more quality action for our ITV Racing tips this Saturday.
That contest is covered in this review of Saturday afternoon racing alongside three events from Newbury. Two Group 3 races are discussed plus the Mill Reef Stakes featuring several progressive two-year-olds. All races are set to be televised on ITV racing.

Dubai International Airport World Trophy Stakes – 1.40 Newbury
Following a relatively unproductive time during June and July during which he was a best-placed fourth when racing in three Group races, Tis Marvellous opened his account for the season when winning a minor 5f event at Leicester last time. He now attempts this Group 3 contest over the same distance but his ability at this level is questionable.
There will be opposition from Equilateral who began the Summer by finishing second to Battaash in the King Stands Stakes. That promise has not been fulfilled in his three subsequent races but he never recovered from a slow start in Ireland last weekend.
Lazuli could also feature following a decent effort in fourth place at Deauville last time. He may appreciate this shorter trip and faster ground while he also won at Sandown back in June when racing off a lower mark. Take note also of the consistent Wise Words who was beaten less than two lengths when fourth at Doncaster on her seasonal reappearance earlier this month. She was hampered in the closing stages of that race in which Moss Gill was further back.
Tip – Wise Words to Win.
Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup Stakes – 2.50 Newbury
Only four runners have been declared for this 1m3f Group 3 contest but it is still a very competitive event. Having won his last two races at this grade over 1m2f, Extra Elusive will now bid for a three-timer. With the in-form Hollie Doyle expected to be riding, the 5-year-old gelding will be a leading challenger but will be opposed by the Mark Johnson trained Elarqam.
Another 5-year-old, he raced in Group 1 company last season and also won the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes. In three contests this term, he has not really flourished with a much higher rating but now races of a much more manageable mark.
Gifts of Gold will represent Godolphin and he was an easy winner at Chelmsford on his only appearance this term back in August. However, he is unproven at this level unlike Desert Encounter who has been consistent at this grade and won the 2019 edition of this race. He could have finished much closer but for a troubled passage when third over 1m3f at Windsor in his previous outing.
Tip -Desert Encounter to win.
Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes– 3.25 Newbury
When winning a decent Listed event at Ripon last month, the twice unbeaten Bahrain Pride raced in a manner which suggests there is more to come and he will a leading candidate for this 2-year-old 6f Group 2 event.
Rhythm Master is also likely to be competitive after finishing third in a Group 1 event at Deauville last time in soft ground. Six furlongs or more will suit a horse who won by more than four lengths on his only other start at Haydock.
Do not discount Fivethousandtoone who was just beaten by Bahrain Pride at Windsor before scoring comfortably at Newcastle last time winning impressively by four lengths, a race which was more like a training gallop for the 2-year-old colt.
There is also Devilwala who won his first outing before following home easy Gimcrack winner Minzaal at York.
Tip – Fivethousandtoone to Win.
QTS Ayr Gold Cup – 3.40 Ayr
This 6f Class 2 handicap has attracted its usual high number of entrants, and Nahaarr will hope to gain compensation for his close ninth-place finish in the Goodwood Stewards Cup when starting favourite. He is expected to be ridden by successful St Leger jockey Tom Marquand and was a winner of his prior contest at Newbury.
Among the challengers will be Mr Lupton who won a handicap at the Curragh last weekend. After mediocre efforts in the Wokingham Stakes Stewards Cup and last season’s renewal, his third place in the Great St Wilfred offered hope of better times ahead.
Staxton won that handicap at Ripon and the weights are very similar with Mr Lupton. Although he could only finish tenth in this event last season, he raced off a 4lb higher mark that September day.
Recent Portland Handicap winner Stone Of Destiny could also be involved after he had returned to form in his previous race when second-placed over five furlongs. That distance may be his optimum trip.
Tip – Staxton to Win.
