Day 1 of Royal Ascot is upon us and we have picked out four selections from the six races that we’ll be using for our Royal Ascot day 1 lucky 15 tips.
A lucky 15 is a great type of bet to place because you are only looking for one horse out of the four to win, and depending on the odds, you could win enough to pay for your stake. Some bookies offer extra incentives such as treble the odds if you only get on winner, which really helps the appeal of this type of bet.
We have taken a couple of our Royal Ascot day 1 tips on board and added in a couple more against those selections to make up this lucky 15.
Betfred – bet £10 get a £30 free bet PLUS a £10 refund if your first bet loses.
Ladbrokes – bet £10 to get 3 free £10 bets.
bet365 – up to £100 in bet credits for Ascot.
3.05pm – Guildsman
3.40pm – Battaash
4.20pm – Phoenix of Spain
5.35pm – Magic Wand
After winning by six lengths at Goodwood in his only racecourse appearance, Guildsman could be worth noting for this 6f juvenile event with Oisin Murphy once again riding for trainer Archie Watson. Among the Aidan O’Brien contingent earmarked for this race, Arizona could be his best option after his colt won by eight lengths at the Curragh following a second-placed effort on his debut. There was also much to like about Threat when he won his only race last time at Newmarket when comfortably beating two more fancied Godolphin horses.
If Battaash runs to his best form in this race he will win. However, there are quirks to this superstar sprinter that means you could lose your money before he even enters the starting stalls. 12 months ago he got worked up in the preliminaries and Blue Point eventually caught him to win the race. Since then, Battaash looks to have matured and blew his rivals away on reappearance at Haydock, leaving the likes of Mabs Cross, Alpha Delphini and Kachy trailing. Battaash is the fastest horse in this race and if he gets a good tow in he’ll be hard to beat. Even with Blue Point in the field.
Too Darn Hot was the top-rated juvenile of 2018, but he has been beaten into second place in both starts this season with doubts expressed as to whether he has really progressed from his all-conquering two-year-old days. Phoenix Of Spain beat the John Gosden colt in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and there is no reason to suggest that Too Darn Hot can reverse placings especially as that winner may improve for the race. That win looked as comfortable as the 3 length official distance and unless Too Darn Hot has improved a lot for that run, it is hard to see how he can reverse the form.
The last race of the day is the Wolferton Stakes and Magic Wand looks an interesting runner here for Aidan O’Brian. She is a proper Group 1 filly running in a listed race and was last seen at Belmont. Ryan Moore will need to be at his best to get a good position from a wide draw, but if he can then the return to 1m2f should bring out the best in her and at the current price of 5/1, she looks a great bet to round off our Royal Ascot day 1 lucky tip.
The odds for the 4-fold accumulator is a massive 423/1 with bet365. So a £1 lucky 15 bet could return up to £1014 if all four selections win.
