Ahead of the Ryanair Chase on day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival, we asked Ash to take a look through the card and pick out some predictions. See his race preview and Ryanair Chase tips below.
Dismissed by some as the Gold Cup bottlers race, the Ryanair Chase has become an integral part of the Festival and tends to attract a high-class field, regardless of those views.
The issue from an ante-post standpoint is working out who will run here or will take up assignments elsewhere, be it the Champion Chase or the Gold Cup.
A Plus Tard seems set to take his chance in the race and showed himself to be effective at the track when winning by a wide margin in the Novice Handicap over two miles and four furlongs at the 2019 Cheltenham Festival, albeit that race being run on the old course as opposed to the new course as the Ryanair is. His form this season includes a defeat of Chacun Pour Soi at Leopardstown which reads well, however, this was the Mullins’ horse first run of the season and at a time when many of his horses were in need of a run. Chacun Pour Soi (see our Champion Chase 2020 tips) put in a significantly improved effort next time out at the Dublin Racing Festival when defeating Min, earning an RPR of 175 compared to the 167 he was given for his seasonal reappearance and somewhat underlining the fact that first outing was needed. With that form taking a knock it may be worthwhile looking at another Irish raider for your Ryanair betting tips.
Min is likely to go off as the highest-rated horse in the field (official rating of 171) which bodes well as seven of the last nine winners of the race have come from the top two rated horses to run. His form over two and a half miles reads 12111 and there is a strong case that this is his best trip, his twenty length win in last seasons Melling Chase at Aintree a clear stand out as an example of what he can do at the distance. His second to a much improved and race fit Chacun Pour Soi at the Dublin Racing Festival shows that he is still operating at a high level. It is unlikely that anything of Chacun Pour Soi’s ability will run here so he seems set to go close to finally breaking his Festival duck and shaking off his case of the Djakadams after being denied by Altior on three occasions.
Watch Frodon win the 2020 Ryanair Chase.
The British trained challenge is led by season’s winner Frodon. Having gotten off to a poor start this campaign with defeats at Aintree and Haydock he bounced back with victory at Kempton, denying Keeper Hill in second and with favourite Top Notch back in third. Though that form is unlikely to inspire many, Kempton is not his track, whereas the new course at Cheltenham very much is. He has recorded five wins over course and distance, including last season’s Ryanair which had some high-quality competition in behind. He will be sure to set out to make all and it would not be an issue if something was sent just to pester him for the lead, as Sub Lieutenant was last year, as his superior jumping eases any pressure put on him.
Possibly lacking the class of a horse such as Min he more than makes up for it with his sheer determination to win and the current best price of 13/2 makes sense as a solid each way bet.
