The Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket is the main highlight of this Saturday afternoon’s racing while there are also two decent Group 3 events at Ascot which are also covered in this preview. A valuable two-year-old contest is also included which features Middle Park placed horse Summer Sands. All four races are set to be televised on ITV4.

Racing TV Redcar Two Year Old Trophy – 2.55 Redcar

For this Listed 6f race, Summer Sands would appear to be a serious contender after finishing third and just two lengths behind Earthlight in the Middle Park Stakes last weekend. An earlier fifth position in the Gimcrack suggests that this colt is rated highly by connections, especially over this distance.

The opposition will be provided by Troubador who has been a consistent horse this season but he has competed in nurseries for his last three races. He is a course and distance winner and appears to have no preference for ground conditions.

The much-traveled Praxeology from the Mark Johnson yard could also be involved at the finish especially after winning a decent nursey at Chester last time. He also won a 6f event at Salisbury in soft going during June.

Tip – Summer Sands to win (11/10 with Grosvenor Sport)

Property Raceday Cumberland Lodge Stakes – 2.35 Ascot

Having won three middle distance races this season in handicap company, Faylaq is now asked to compete in this 1m4f Group 3 contest but the 3-year-old colt failed in his only attempt to win at Class 2 level. This race will be a much tougher contest.

The William Haggas trained horse will receive 9lb in weight from the more experienced Morando who beat Kew Gardens in the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes at Chester earlier this season. Races against Defoe and Enable followed before finishing a close second behind Technician in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes.

Among the other contenders, Sextant was a well-beaten fourth behind Technician in that Newbury race and renews rivalry on similar terms. He has since won at Chester in a four-runner Listed race. The Tim Easterby trained Wells Farhh Go may offer more appeal especially with easing ground and he was a Listed event at Newmarket back in June.

Tip – Morando to Win (15/8 with Grosvenor Sport)

Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes – 3.25 Newmarket

The Prix de la Foret at Longchamp had been an option for Laurens this weekend, but connections have opted to contest this Group 1 one mile race for fillies and mares. Karl Burke’s 4-year-old filly won this race last season and has always competed favourably at Newmarket. However, she has won just once in five outings this term.

Although Laurens has been beaten just once at Newmarket, her conqueror in last season’s 1,000 Guineas is expected to be a leading contender on Saturday. Billesdon Brook won at 66/1 that day but failed to win in five subsequent outings following that classic victory. There have been signs of a return to form especially when winning a Group 3 event at Goodwood last time, but she has yet to fully recapture that Guineas sparkle.

When Laurens was recently beaten into fifth place at Group 1 level in Ireland, Iridessa and Hermosa finished a close first and second with both fillies are engaged for this race. 1,000 Guineas winner Hermosa is a true miler and is a previous winner on soft ground while Iridessa was well beaten in the guineas and seems an inconsistent filly.

There is also a possibility that Group 1 Falmouth Stakes winner Veracious could threaten but she has not raced since that mid-July victory and she improved significantly from three previous efforts this season.

Tip – Laurens to Win (4/1 with Grosvenor Sport)

John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes – 3.40 Ascot

Following a break of approximately ten months, Tabdeed reappeared in a small-runner 6f Class 3 event at Doncaster and his comfortable success suggests he could be a leading player over a similar distance in this Group 3 contest.

Tabdeed is expected to be opposed by Cape Byron among others. The 5-year-old gelding has competed predominantly in handicap company before finishing well-beaten behind Ten Sovereigns in the July Cup. He was then entered for the Group 2 City of York Stakes where he was a respectable third amid suggestions that this race could be a decent opportunity.

The very busy Raucous could be another lively contender after claiming victory in a Listed event at Newmarket last time but this will be his twelfth race since mid-February.

Tip – Cape Byron to Win (2/1 with Grosvenor Sport)
