Saturday’s Horse Racing Preview – A NAP and NB from @racethejones

We asked one of Twitter’s newest horse racing tipsters, @racethejones, for his thoughts on a Super Saturday card of racing and he’s given us two bets to make up a double at around 20/1.

This Saturday is set up to be an exciting day of racing and the weather forecast couldn’t be better for it. With the highlight of these contests being at Curragh, where eight runners will battle it out in the Irish Derby. The UK Saturday racecard also includes Chester, Newcastle, Newmarket and York.

5.20 Curragh – Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Group 1)

The feature race of the day (as mentioned) is the Irish Derby contested over 1m4f. Eight top runners will be competing here, the stand out performer here is Anthony Van Dyck. He made all last time out to win the Epsom Derby in what was a premier racing event and is looking to follow in the steps of some Ballydoyle greats such as his Colt Galileo himself by becoming a dual derby winner. Ryan Moore is also confirmed to be back on board which is a plus.

Anthony Van Dyck’s biggest threat would seem to be Madhmoon, who finished second in the Epsom Derby by just half a length to his rival. This run was eye catching and it was a career best for him after being unbeaten last season. He should have a better chance on this more conventional track after having to change legs at one point at Epsom, he has an excellent turn of foot and if he can utilise this at the correct time then he could be hard to stop.

Broome has looked good this season for Aidan O’Brien, after a poor run out of the stalls at Epsom he made good ground to keep up with the top contenders even when forced to race out wide he looked the strongest at the line to the others. He is definitely one to consider as connections have stated that he seems to race ‘lazily’ rather than not having the speed or stamina that is required.

NAP Betting Tip – Madhmoon to win @ 5/2 with Coral.

3:00 Newcastle – Betfair Exchange Northumberland Vase Handicap (Class 2)

There are some high quality stayers on display in this contest. Theglasgowwarrior seems a danger now stepping back up to two miles, we know that he can stay well. However, the preference is for Carnwennan who has progressed rapidly and doesn’t seem to show signs of halting yet. He has had three superb effort runs this term and this could prove that he is a step ahead of the handicapper. He has won his most recent two contests since moving to two miles, which proves that this is his ideal distance.

Last time out, he won at York in a greatly contested class three handicap event where he out fought Mancini (who went off as favourite in the Ascot Stakes last week) to win pleasingly. He then went on to defy a hefty penalty easily at Chelmsford on the all-weather. He’s been handed a kind draw in stall five, has already won on an all-weather surface and has progressed in each run. He should definitely go close here.

NB Betting Tip – Carnwennan to win @ 5/1 with Coral.
